And only mono.

Been lurking but silent for a while, so I thought I would share my latest addition. I generally dont like 1176/fet compressor plugins I have messed with, with the exception of the SD3 insert. My tracking compressor started having issues, which caused me to spiral into the youtube/gearslutz threads, which all seemed to end with the WA76. A friend of mine who has several outboard compressors, also recommended the wa76 and sent a couple of audio clips of them used in the front end, so I went ahead and grabbed one. So far it does the 1176 thing very well on snare, and from the recorded vocals I had, it seems to be a good mix. Since I dont have a pair, I dont know how they do on rooms, but will do a dual mono print test at one point.

It might be getting expensive but it is one of those things that you have to wonder if you really need or is it just fairy dust?
I for the most part find that can mix quite comfortably what my Studio One Pro offers as plugins and rarely reach out just for a "color" plugin.

Personal opinion, as an amateur but one who's got more than two decades of experience... Really, you want both. I use the stock Reaper plugins for a lot of stuff precisely because they ARE really transparent, and if you want to process without really coloring that's important. However, I've got a couple "color" plugins that I use heavily as well, probably most notably the Sonimus Burnley73, which do add color and saturation but can sound awesome doing so.

There's no one size fits all solution, but if you can get a couple "color" alternatives to a really clean default option, then it can definitely give some pretty good results.

Well, Reaper is a bit sparse in comparison to S1 Producer plugins, S1 even has some color plugins, Tri-Comp, tube saturation, etc.

Yeah, Reaper is really focused on transparent effects. there are a ton of free or cheap "color" options out there, though, so that's not a big deal.

I have been playing with this through reinsert, compared to the tracks/compression I was using on random channels, and I will say that this does have a more complex sound than any plugin I have used; however, this also gave me another respect for Sonimus Tuco and the Acme XLA3. None of these are emulating an 1176, so the sound is different, and I am sure that most people would pick the wa76 sound over the other two, but all three are extremely useful and almost up to taste.

As far as the depth/complexity, I have it running as a chain from my 273 into the wa76, it is getting hit with more than just the compressor which may account for some extra sound.
