So In your case the original route was larger than the footprint of the Gotoh? Thats a better problem to have then too small I suppose.

The top side of the route was bigger than the Gotoh, which is normal. I just wanted to fill the gap since I was going to add a veneer. The back of the route was too short, which required shorter locking bolts and the treble side corner near the post required a bit of massaging to make the Gotoh operate smoothly.

If you don't care about the bass side gap you may be able to get away with just shorter locking bolts.

I see. Is the Gotoh foot print identical to an origial Floyd? Next time I change the strings I can see if my OG Floyd with fit in the 580 route.

Also I was wondering, for the nut the Schaller R3 seems to be the right width but I don't know what radius to order for the Soloist XL. I need to be about .5mm lower with the nut at the first fret.

Nice thread to see how the tremolos fit.
There was a site once that had alot of infos about all things jackson, including which tremolos fit, and what to be carefull about but it's no longer online. Probably there's an archive of it somewhere.

The R3 fits in width, but it's to high. What i did on one of my Jacksons (SL3) was to change the tremolo for a Schaller locking Tremolo and the nut for a Gotoh (GHL-2 i think) because they are not as high. Problem with both the Schaller/Floyd/Gotoh nuts is, that the screw hole locations to mount them on the neck are in different locations, so if you can, keep the existing nut (was not possible for me because i changed the chrome hardware to gold). Not a big deal, plug the holes and drill new ones but annoying, that they have to be different.

What else comes to mind are the tremolo posts and bushings. The Floyd/Schaller bushings are almost the exact size but have a different thread, because why should they be the same...
If you pull the old ones, the new ones will likely fit (helps to put the bushings in the freezer before inserting them into the guitar), the Gotoh are bigger in diameter but also have the post-locking function via the screw insinde them.

Just thought i'd share what i found while searching for a tremolo replacement for the JT580LP, as i spent far too much time searching for these infos and overthinking every aspect ^^

Id like to do the posts and if the bushings are different then Ill have to do those too. Do luthiers ever file the string grooves on locking nuts or is sanding the wood under the nut more common? This guitar has perfect neck binding that goes all around the headstock and is perfect by the nut. Dont really want to do any sanding. Im probably going to run all this by my local luthier. This guitar is sweet, it just needs the nut, trem and light fret job done.

Any idea on the radius of the nut or how I would measure that?

Pretty sure your Jackson will have the standard Jackson compound radius, 12-16". USA Jacksons come with a R3 with a 10" radius, i think the Tackeuchi ones are 12" but i am not sure about that.
With the 12" at the first fret, it really doesn't matter to much if the nut is anywhere between the 10" of the Floyd nut or the ~16" of the Gotoh ones.
You could buy the Floyd Special Nut (the same as the 1000 ones so will work fine) these are 12".

Filing the slots is not a good idea, as it could lead to slipping if the slots get to deep. Better file the base of the nut but that's still tough work as all of them are hardened.

But probably start by taking of the nut an measure the dimensions, who knows, probably the hardware used on the Professionals is a bit different to the later Pro Series and one of the R3-R10 will fit better (of which i own three, hence the time i put in researching all this "nonsense"^^).

BTW Schaller, who make the Floyds and their own tremolos, and Gotoh have drawing with every necessary dimension on their website.

But if you're going to let a luthier make the change, why bother, get the tremolo you like best and let them do the work;)

What he said.
Floyd rose sells various locking nuts for different sized necks. [...]

As an adiitional info (and to add more confusion), Schaller, the manufacturer of the Floyd Rose trems now sells locking nuts (and tremolos) with different radii, from 8-16 i think, with the widths of the R2 or R3.

Also, alot of the Floyd locking nuts are sold out and after asking Schaller directly for a R10 one, they wrote me that they are out of production.

I wonder if the rumours are true and Floyd is going to stop production in germany and move to the US, hence the sold out parts and the new offerings from Schaller directly.

I see their height measurements listed but not sure what exactly that measurement is, as in where on the nut they are measuring. The schaller ones have a diagram that helps some but still isnt clear. The Floyd Rose just has list of the measurements. I may have to order a few that look close and try them.

I finally found a Pro Plus in the wild, I've been itching to try one since they were announced. This one had an especially beautiful top, especially compared to some examples I've seen online. Played and sounded great too.

I was sort of surprised to see it was Chinese made, they've come a long way from the cheap crappy import guitars I had in the early 2000's.

The height listed is the vertical dimension on the side view left (7.1mm for R3 nut)

Honestly, the Chinese X series guitars (all the crackle finishes) I've played have been considerably better than the Indonesian ones.

I guess I have a sickness for King V’s. This one followed me home yesterday. It was used at GC and they are taking 10% off used stuff right now. I’ve always been curious, but never enough to buy a new one. It’s in good shape with just a couple dings - none on the tips which is a miracle.

After an hour of playing it, I did swap in a set of Gotoh tuners and an Antiquity JB for the bridge spot.

That's honestly the best top I've seen on them. Most have been bad.

How did it play?

Thoughts on the Demmelition Fury? The white one with the TOM. Considering getting one after being fed up with a few bad Epiphone explorers in a row.
