Eh, it's even more simple than that.
Take any amp and make it loud and it will sound good. That's literally the story of guitar music.
That doesn't mean quiet stuff doesn't sound good. It's just volume will fix just about any issue you have.
Too much bass? Don't worry, only so much will...
Tone is in the cab in the room. Big speakers moving a lot of air. Doesn't matter what's moving the air as long as there is a lot of it smashing every corner of the room.
I've had better luck, but yeah, some have dodgy rods. I think there was a time in the early 00's that Carvin cheaped out on rods, pretty much the worst of them I've seen have been from around 02' to 06', but maybe that's just a coincidence.
You can still find old Carvin XB (35") and LB (34") models for dirt cheap, but you have to jump on them because they don't last. If <24 "frets" isn't a deal breaker if you want the longer scale.
Eh, this is one of those procedures that really depends on the quality of the work done, so whether the outcome is good or bad is entirely up to how much planning and care is taken.
If you can build a whole scratch body, you can probably do this mod. So the choice is pretty much yours.
Guys...
