Yep, it was exactly that, bright pups through bright amp, I played through a Mesa Dual Rec and the Het sounded much better, as always its all relative to everything else. Glad you are loving yours, I am a huge Hetfiled fan so it was a tough day when I decided to switch it out...
I found the JH overly hot and spiky, especially for playing live, dont get me wrong its not bad by any stretch of the imagination, but what I mostly liked about it was the tightness whilst still retaining dynamics. The 81 gave me the tightness without it being overgained, it seemed smoother and...
The EMG81 imo is THE metal pickup; attack, clarity, punch, sounds great in a mix recorded and live. Here I am giving it a spin through some Morbid Angel (Covenant era) riffs - which is your choice of metal pup? :shred:
I have now had more time with the album and I have to say it has grown on me massively. I now believe that this is the most focused and important release Metallica have done since the Black Album. I can hear influences from the whole of the back catalogue throughout the album, and even though I...
Still early days for me, but my initial impressions are mixed. I dont think the riffs are as good compared to say DM, i am still waiting for that Hetfiled riff that makes me go 'yessss!', the many groovy riffs begin to sound samey to me after a while. Also not a fan of Kirk's leads so far, they...
I moved onto the Superfatboy as at the time I was using an oversized 4x12 and it was just getting a big hassle taking it to practices and gigs. Since getting the Superfatboy I have not looked back. It doesnt sound boomy to my ears, but it really does fill the room yet the sound is tight and...
I always tend to favour boosting the traditional 'rhythm' channels on high gain amps. The blue channel gives you a phenomenal rock tone and a boost takes it into metal territory. I prefer it to the red channel for rhythm because it sounds thicker and the gain is more usable. The last solo in...
Cheers guys! i used the EMG Hetset for the recording, I have since replaced the bridge pickup with the 81 as I found the Het bridge too bright. The 5153 settings were pretty flat, all around 12o'clock, worth mentioning that I boosted the front end with a Maxon OD808.
Hey guys, here is a playthrough of one of my tracks using my custom Sabre Wraith. We recorded rhythm guitars on the blue channel of the EVH 5150iii and mic'ed up my Zilla Superfatboy with an SM57. This combo of guitar/amp/cab has really cured my GAS, i really do not feel I need anything else at...
