Sorry, no advice on getting the Merrow sound, but in my experience, I've had better results with the MXR 10 band EQ in the FX loop on any amp I've tried it on so far.

I picked up a Spider IV 75 and returned it the same day. I have no experience with the 2 Randall amps that you listed, but I picked up a Randall RG1503 212 and I really couldn't be happier with it.
