A few years back I disfigured my RG1527 to fit EMGs to it. I since went back to my DiMarzios but thought the guitar forever tainted. This *could* steal me over to the Duncan camp and I'd be a sad panda if at least DiMarzio didn't join you in this venture.
The vid with Tosin might put a damper on everyone spaffing over H-S and H-S-S 8s, as he runs through the wiring you'll notice he doesn't have a position on the 5 way that uses the middle pickup on its own, so I'd imagine it's not designed to sound amazing on its own and it's mostly their for...
I have one in my 30" OLP tuned reet down and I think it sounds great. Doubly amazing in the "Petrucci" middle position with a D Sonic. With the heavier strings tuned down it sounds really jazzy yet defined.
My love for the H-S look led me to buy an RGR465M. Belting guitar. Tonewise they're just humbuckers, there's a tiny difference in tone with the coils covering less space on the string, but they are voiced accordingly. The air norton S in the RGR sounds very close to the standard 6 and 7 versions...
Amp settings? The super 3 is really low middy and bassy, whereas the JB's got more upper mid and treble - it might just be that your ear's really used to the old sound.
On the superswitch you only need two of the banks. Hook pole 2 up to your tip, pole 4 to your ring, then connect the hot wire of each pickup to the 1 contact of each of the poles, connect 2,3,4,5 of those to the ground. Bit of a waste of a superswitch but it'll do the job! Swap 5 for 1 if...
What he said. The superswitch is a great switch because of how easy and simple it makes stuff! If you're asking what I think you're asking though you could just get away with a DPDT toggle.....
