the finish started coming off after you started sanding? if so it was cause you did not have enough clear built up before sanding and or were sanding to aggressively

You want to be careful with nail polish. Depending on the clear on the guitar the acetone in the nail polish might actually remove some of the finish or make a sticky spot on the neck
