Not really shortcuts, just things along the lines of rectifying bad situations, things that have went wrong for you and the lighbulb saved you, Things you have learned that have made things easier to do etc. Most of this is common stuff, jigs, templates etc, but I reckon there are tons more out...
Those are great, Hywel! Thanks! Yeah its not about shortcuts at all. I've learned that the proper way to do things is to take plenty of time, plan, and work slowly. Well that works for me at least. It was more of some cool little tips and tricks you have learned along the way, and maybe some...
Like MaxOfMetal said, its going to be a pain. Especially the forearm contour. As I understand purely from looking into it, 3d files are much more expensive than 2d (engraving) to have CNCd, and the forearm contour is going to warrant some 3d programming. Another options is to sand it down, get...
One thing I've always wondered, but not really seen documented anywhere is the stuff you can "get away with" when making a guitar. After spending the best part of a year reading about stuff and dabbling, I've found ways to do and not to do stuff and picked up many little "clever" bits and pieces...
I managed to sort it guys, it turns out that my 3-way toggle wasn't the same spec as the one in the BKP diagram. I just had to invert the two cables which weren't the pickups. Cheers guys, foolish mistake, but one I can reference in future!
I've installed a set of BKP juggernauts in my PRS SE, but there is just no sound coming from them. At first I thought it was the capacitor I bridged to make fit, but I still have the same issue after swapping it out with an orange drop. I have followed the wiring diagram completely, and my...
Hi Guys, I'm back for more questions after a few months out. I have a fretboard and some nice ivoroid binding to go around it. The fretboard is the perfect size, perfectly cut. Will I need to cut the 1.5mm around the outside, or will the binding be blended with the neck? I would have...
Having been in a similar position, there are three tools which I consider essential to a build. These are: - Table Router : Flattening neck laminates, fingerboards, neck surface. Also good with guide bits for following templates (like in the Ormsby vids on youtube). - Band-saw : Rough cutting...
Hi Bud, I'm similarly new to this, so I thought I'd chime in with my thoughts. 1) I think you can, but I have no experience with left handed instruments. Most I have seen and played seem to be almost mirror images except for certain pickups. Cheap hack you could do is get a righty template cut...
Sorry to hijack, but whats the deal with grounding when using shielding paint? I've read all over that it requires grounding, but I have no idea how to go about that, especially with a hardtail build, as I'd normally ground to the trem.
I'm seriously considering making this. The trouble with the wood that I have is that it is often bowed or mismatched in size. I buy my wood from a local guy who sells exotic hard wood for really good prices. The problem is though, I live in Scotland, so the wood is stored in a cold workshop...
Cheers guys, that sounds like a plan. I'm in this for the long haul! After my startup costs in materials and tools, I'm well into the "expensive hobby" territory, I'm in too deep lol. I have a new respect for all things luthiery though. Some of you guys on here make it look so simple too!
Yeah I think a hand planer is the way to go. Power planers are great for doors and stuff, but I think they are a bit unwieldy for neck blanks. It might be better for me to try and plane the raw material with the power planer before gluing, then using the hand planer to refine.
