Cool stuff, I use the MM EZX as well. Your kick cuts through a lot more in the MM version, But that may be partly de to the fact that the drums are much louder in that version too. Anyway, both sound cool, and i'm probably biased (lol).
I am currently using Reaper, but i think i'll be following this thread closely, because even though i used Reaper since i started mixing, i'm now wondering if there is any DAW that i would rather use.
The thing is, you don't NEED any of those things, as ola (fearedse) said, it's all in the mixing and tweaking. i made some decent sounding mixes using a POD (HD) Superior drummer and some free VST. chances are you will be discouraged if you hope pluggin an axe fx in will simply improve your...
Very cool! loved your bass tone! what did you use for it? also, what amp model did you use for guitar? maybe the transition around 1:57 could have been a bit smoother, but other than that, very good job!
As a POD HD(500) user, I found your test clip pretty cool, although i usually prefer my guitars a bit brighter. I thought there was something weird going on with the cymbals, but i understand it wasn't the point of your audio clip! Anyway, I'm sure you can get great results with a bit further...

Bridge is Crunch lab, and it is the only one you hear in this demo. the other one is stock Ibanez pickup. The crunch lab is awesome in this guitar, it's punchier than anything else i own!

I loved it, snare was maybe a liiitle bit loud, other than that, it had just the right amount of everything, from the composition itself to the recording! Loved the video too, the vibrating low string view was awesome!
Reaper is your workstation, it is software only. You need to connect physically to your pc using usb/firewire. This is what an interface is for, and it isn't the same thing as a D.I. Box, wich just alter the analog signal. Edit: ninja'd
