I have a 92 as I recall blackface dual rec rack mount. It is a monster. Tight, thump for days, modern and vintage get heavy use. Really a nice amp. That said I admit I run it in stereo with my 94 Mk IV head, gives me so much sonic territory blending these two. Have to phase flip the recto...
Black Ibanez S7320. Dropped in SD JB and Jazz, and a pair of custom made black pearloid knobs. Great guitar kept super clean. Looking for $450 locally in MD and surrounding areas. Could ship but that is more involved, buyer would pay for shipping.
Go Mahogany get the S series Ibanez...preferably a MIJ model pre-2001. Used typically 600-700 just picked up my third for $299 off Ebay looked though it was never played. Fast neck, tone superior to basswood, hard to beat.
Yes as said play a ton of different models or you'll forever be chasing that next tone. Also try to get one in a playing situation like yours...meaning if you'll crank it at all a store may not allow that and amps sound very different at bedroom and stage volumes. Nice to bring your guitars...
Use a tubescreamer into my mesa for high gain applications....very slight on the drive and tone maybe 2 o'clock level almost maxed. Just pushes the tubes to a bright saturation. i add the ZWD in for when I solo and turn it's tone toward more bass, like 10 o'clock, and the two other knobs...
Sustained volume loss that occurs over time power amp section typically a tube or tubes. intermittent up and down volume like a flourescent bulb going bad is in the preamp section typically. A preamp tube, the send receive circuit, etc. That is where a voltage drop in and out will hit you as...
Furman up top, Decimator Pro Rack G Stereo Mod, EBtech 8 Channel Hum, Sennhesier Wireless, TC G Major 2, a second power conditioner, two GCX 8 loop switchers, 2 pedal trays (Keeley TS, Wylde OD, Line 6 DL4, Eventide Mod Factor, Aphex Aural Exciter for Guitar, Digitech Hyper Phase and power supplies.
It's about 210 lbs, 2 handles on each side (all 4 sides), 4 inch wheels, easy to move in and out of trailer and around venues. Lift up steps blows but with 4 people its easier.
But everything is self contained all the cabling, switching, etc. I need only run power and speaker cables over to the cabs. Fast to set up. Easy to roll, tour trailer...only issues are venues with steps or such but it has 2 handles per side (all sides).
Many people have multiple Overdrives in a chain....They each are set to different tones either "in" for a different situation, crushed mesa facepeeling with one, gentle jazzy creme with another...or stacked where multiples are on at once set differently to make a bigger better tone. For example...
Right as said in theory a pre and an amp together make a head...but most companies don't sell exact pres and amps to match their heads probably to make more $. For example Mesa does not make a Mk IV pre amp...they do make power amps that are close say the 2:90 whcih is voiced ratehr close to...
Mesa Mk IV....very versitile Fender cleans, good heavy distortion. Petrucci, Metallica in the day, Lamb of God, Ankla and many more use them, sometimes in combo with a Rec or Stilleto.
Every time I have been in the studio they used two or more mics...one very close to the speaker and one away. Not uncommon to have one on the speaker, one at 3 feet and one at 12 feet away. Different types of mics and they pick up different dynamics in the sound at these distances. They are...
I have my Mk IV and Dual Rec in my rack with rack effects (in the effects loops of the amps as noted above) and slide out drawers of pedals in that rack too, all in front of the amps. So you have patches in the rack stuff to control, pedals you'd like on and off when needed and amp channels...
