What's the problem with these mixes?

The problem is you don't like the style or aesthetic of the production. That's it. That's the problem, which isn't really a problem.

dialing in a high gain Petrucci-type lead tone

The only other thing I'd add is the guitar and guitarist and mic choice and everything else, as well as the sounds of the instruments around it make a MASSIVE difference, and even the gain structure would be making a difference.

Reaper sucks. Can it be made to not suck?

I find this with every piece of professional software. "Pro Tools sucks"... no... you just suck at it... As to the original question. If you liked Logic, Studio One is your best bet. Reaper is great and is super-duper excellent value, but if value isn't your primary concern....

    Video Editing Programs

Resolve is great. But for an 11 year old, get him to start on iMovie if you can, just because it comes with that Apple royalty free sound library among other things.

    What DAW do you use?

I actually Lecture at University, and this is one of my key areas of discussion with students. It doesn't matter at all, and everyone's workflow and mindset is different. I currently use 4 separate DAWs for different things, and that's because I find them all particularly fast workflows for...

Setting levels properly from axefx iii into daw?

You should look at the Pink Noise mixing technique to make this even easier :)

Setting levels properly from axefx iii into daw?

Yea mostly accurate, as long as you use 32-bit float. You can still clip within a DAW quite easily at 24-bit, mostly between plugins is where it happens. I'd just add that the REASON you aim for -18dBFS RMS/LUFS in digital is because it's equal to 0dBVU RMS on hardware. Most AD converters are...

    Studio upgrade pathways

I've had a first generation RME UFX for 10 years now. It still outperforms most interfaces I've worked with elsewhere, and it's USB 2. The ONLY issue it's had in that time was the PSU went, and the replacement was a couple of hundred AUD$, and turnaround was like 2 weeks. I got a chance to try...

Mixing VST orchestra - Sforzando, VSCO community library - Epica cover

Mixing symphonic metal is a huge thing. If you're not a member of Nail the Mix, you should be and get the Orchestral months and see how the pros do it. It's a lot of bus processing, and really working on getting the performances right on the individual MIDI instruments.

Help & Opinions about this Mix

I think this advice has led you in the wrong direction. Your guitars didn't lack high end. Guitars don't really need anything over 8-10kHz. The newer mix is thin to me and gives a real buzzy character to the guitars that you wouldn't see in a high end mix, and I preferred the tone of the earlier...

    Rate Our Single

Writing thoughts as I hear them, then judgment at the end. - When doing the telephone thin effect, make sure to take out the high end as well. Otherwise it's kinda unpleasant on the ears. - Drums feel a little lacking in depth and dimension. Sample kit? If so work on varied velocities a bit...

    Cakewalk or Studio One?

If you like the Pro Channel stuff from Cakewalk for sound, Overloud Tapedesk is the plugin version.

    New basement studio

Sick space. Watch your monitors spacing. You have the room to get the desk away from the wall and have the correct setup and treatment, so use it. Let me know if you are unsure how to do that!

New to recording: In home setup and help

At the moment I'm recommending for home artists Presonus' Studio One. Free Demo on their website. It's just super easy to use and super stable at the moment, with features up the wazoo. They also these days have really good interfaces with USB-C, so you can buy one, it comes with the artist...

    Tear this mix apart, please.

I just moved and haven't treated my listening room yet, so headphone balance is what you're getting. Just first listen notes. Your low mids on your guitar in the intro and making it muddy The shimmer sound is quite harsh and could use some saturation to make it easier to listen to. Your...

Opinions on virtual instruments/amp sims etc vs real instruments/real amps in your recording

I teach students that there is 1 golden rule in audio and music. If it sounds good, it is good. Did you play a wrong note or chord and it sounded good? It's good. Did you use a free VST and your hand-me-down crappy electric guitar from your dad with rusted pickups and it sounds good? It is...

    DAW Dilemma

If you're looking at things to try, also try Studio One, there's a demo of the full version and a free version. But honestly, the biggest difference between Reaper and most other paid DAWs, is that Reaper comes with no inbuilt instruments or visually pretty effects. It's fully featured but bare...

Recording full live sessions in my home studio

Yea these are nice. Feel that MAYBE the desk is overkill, but adds to the vibe certainly. Also nice mixes, but the 2nd band the kick feels a little clicky clack for the style. Really enjoyed these though, sitting in my office today working on budgets.
