What makes guitar character? (scale length)

Yes exactly. It is not scale length itself that causes a brighter sound. Instead, if the tuning is unchanged, the strings become thinner or tighter (depending on whether gauge is decreased), become longer, and therefore become more flexible and brighter in tone. However, this is usually what...

Using single string lock nuts made for headless, with headstock guitars?

However, if you use headless string locks behind a zero fret 'nut', you might then create a small length of string beyond the 'nut', which would create a little tuning instability. The whole point of a double locking system is that it eliminates the string lengths beyond nut and saddle.

Decisions - scratch build 7 string, string spacing, scale length, pole-to-string and lots more..

This calculated 'percentage frequency error' is possibly inconsistent across the frets. By 'inconsistent' i mean that, for example, a 0.5 semitone error will show up as a different 'percentage frequency error' depending on which fret it is. An inconsistency would give a wrong impression on a...

Precise Options for Machine Heads / Tuning Heads

Being one of this forum's microtonal guitar geeks i would be interested in any details of what you intend to do. I am wondering why you need high ratio tuners? Usually, a microtonal guitar does not need high ratio tuners any more than a standard guitar does.

EB compensated nuts on Schecters intonation

Well ... no :) We are not stating the same thing two different ways. Also, slot compensation is not considered relative to other slots, it is stated relative to the 'mathematical position' (where a standard nut is placed, and where an additional normal fret would be placed). Your post stated...

EB compensated nuts on Schecters intonation

As i understand it, nut slots require compensating *towards* the 1st fret. A compensated nut is positioned towards the 1st fret by the maximum required slot compensation distance (the compensation distance of the lowest string). Then all the other slots have their compensation distances reduced...

The ergonomics and viability of super wide fret fanning

Seems a good idea to me too. Touch Guitars' U8 Deluxe and S8 have this feature for exactly that reason. https://www.touchguitars.com/models-specs/s8/

Determining guitar balance through simple visualisation

I have a thread similar to this on another guitar forum, and have received some useful technical input from another forum member. This quote wrongly implies that the Centre Of Mass (COM) and the Centre Of Gravity (COG) are the same thing. They are different properties of an object. I was...

New Standard Tuning / Fripp / Guitar Craft / Crafty fifths tuning: Original vision and variants

Here is another approach i have been thinking of ... Start with an all-fifths tuning, for example 6 strings in fifths FCGDAE, which has a similar pitch range to 8 string standard tuning. Divide one or more of the highest fifth intervals each into a minor third and a major third. Optionally...

In search of 6 string guitar with long sustain for Doom/ Funeral Doom metal

I got this slightly wrong. Apparently they have fewer windings, but the result is the same, less electromagnetic drag on the strings, so more sustain.

In search of 6 string guitar with long sustain for Doom/ Funeral Doom metal

Thinking scientifically ... Indeed, trems or Evertune reduce sustain. High mass guitar. Rigid neck. Neck-through construction. As far as i understand (am i wrong?), active pickups use weaker magnets, so have less magnetic drag on the strings. Single pickup guitar for less magnetic drag.

Determining guitar balance through simple visualisation

The mechanics analysis of post #36 is slightly incorrect in some ways, however, the conclusion and the resulting balance visualisation method of post #21 (and post #2) are still correct. Also, the discussion in all my other posts in this thread is still correct. It is a case of having the right...

    Bending near the nut

Yes, it is reasonable to want to :) But the mechanics of the situation mean a lot of force is required. If you want less required force, you have to use lower tension strings (as you have already discovered) or bend further away from the nut.

Ronciswall Headless - New Vapor Model

@GabeR 3 things i appreciate about the Vapor: 1. The tuners do not overhang the edge of the guitar, where they can be damaged, knocked out of tune, or uncomfortably contact a leg. 2. Lower horn has a good downwards angle, securely hooking over the leg. (It is shocking how many guitars are so...

    Multi-scale Evertune coming soon

See the 'Evertune Bass Bridge' thread in this forum. The seemingly far superior Bass Evertune design (which they intend to use for guitar Evertune version 2) has individual bridges and baseplates, so the basic product will be multiscale-capable.

New Standard Tuning / Fripp / Guitar Craft / Crafty fifths tuning: Original vision and variants

If the process of adding smallest possible intervals on top is continued, while staying within C Major Pentatonic, the theoretical result is: CGDAE -> GA CDE GA CDE ... (repeats) While the lower intervals are all fifths, the higher small intervals are a complex mix of major seconds and minor...

New Standard Tuning / Fripp / Guitar Craft / Crafty fifths tuning: Original vision and variants

An update on New Standard Tuning for 7 string guitar, apparently being CGDAEGA (stated relatively, the top A is bordeline impractical on typical guitar scale lengths). I have long been uncertain about my memory of a 1990s Fripp interview that stated this tuning. Finally to my relief this has...

System for Just Intonation on guitar with standard frets (improved minor thirds version)

___Suggested gauges for minor thirds tuning___ ___By ixlramp___ To use my system for Just Intonation on guitar with standard frets, the first step is to set up a guitar in a minor thirds tuning. Ideally, an internet tension calculator would be used to design a custom string set. But for those...
