    Where do you guys practice?

Yeah I "live" alone (oxymoron?) too but in an apartment. I have to play loud or not at all, so it's double headphones for me: earbuds to the Android or desktop, and over that a decent set of headphones to the guitar/bass amp. Turn the music to 90% and then adjust the amp/volume on the guitar --...

Alternate picking technique is killing me.

Yeah, I see it now. You are advocating a "strict economy" approach? I can see the logic of it but for me personally this doesn't work out practically because I am able to play the line already using alternate picking and am too lazy to re-learn my muscle memory. :)

Alternate picking technique is killing me.

Just to make sure we're on the same page, the "main riff" of MOP we're talking about is |--------------------------------------------------------------------| |--------------------------------------------------------------------|...

Alternate picking technique is killing me.

With alternate picking you're usually talking about 1 note and no chords. The main riff to MOP is similiar to Slayer, Sepultura, etc in that its mostly alternative picking but does include some chords, so you simply can't do strict alternate picking all the time because you want to hit the...

CAN You use the metronome too much?

Yeah I think you can ditch it if you're able to confidently play along in time with music that you know in real time. If you can't do that (as it sounds like) then yeah it's necessary to sit down and spend the long hours to get there... no avoiding that. LOL everyone has to pray to the metronome...

Alternate picking technique is killing me.

In my experience economy picking has worked out better in practice than attempting to adhere to strict alternate picking, especially when it comes to crossing strings. Practising alternate picking obviously has its benefits, but IMHO being strict about it requires too much thought to analyze and...

    How do you practice scales?

In '96 John Myung (Dream Theater bassist -- awesome at soloing) did an instructional video called "Progressive Bass Concepts" produced by Hal Leonard. Within the video he demonstrates an idea called "The Backwards Modal Approach." I won't give away the details here, but if you know the basic...

    Who's practicing what?

Learning various King's X songs by ear. Sometimes it's frustrating, like when I just can't get it to sound right. Other times its rewarding. The riff in "Lost in Germany" was beyond me for a long time but one day after a long interlude I attempted it again and got it on the first few tries...

    Left hand technique problem

Okay, this is extremely simple but it worked for me. It's a line from Troy Stetina's book "Speed Mechanics," and it simply says(paraphrased) "Once your finger has lifted up it is too late to correct the problem." With that in mind, I just played some very slow, basic things. Your primary...

    NILE SACRIFICE UNTO SEBEK

They do "have a new bass player" now. Pretty sure they didn't have one when this video was shot. You can hear someone slapping/popping some notes/diads in this video, playing a few runs here and there on the bass. Was Karl or Dallas on the studio track, probably Karl. Kinda off on a tangent...

Anyone got harmonic and melodic minor caged stuff?

Wolfster, I wasn't trying to knock your knowledge, check the link I posted and just modify one or two notes as necessary. And CAGED doesn't cover non-diatonic scales / chords, which is what you asked for. Also, there's a million ways to play a scale. One one string, two strings, ect, ect.

Forum Noob with a technique question

I see no reason to support the pick with 2 fingers + the thumb. The pick can be supported at very fast styles using only thumb/index finger (to hold the pick) + a very accurate wrist motion which uses an alternate (up/down) picking style, even when crossing strings. I hate to say it but you...

New As I Lay Dying song "Within Destruction"

Personally, I never noticed any kind of influence. I always thought As I Lay Dying was pretty damn fresh. They stood out to my ear and IMO are better than the last Cryptopsy record... :hbang:

    Re-Stringing!

If you aren't comfortable changing your strings, I suggest taking your guitar into a trusted local shop, buying a new set of strings, then asking if you can watch the tech change the strings. While he's doing it you can see how he does it and ask a few questions at the same time. Or you could...

Anyone got harmonic and melodic minor caged stuff?

:squint: Jeez dude, what's the problem? First google query: 3 note per string scales Btw, if you are "familiar" with the theory, you wouldn't need to have a tab version of any scale. There's only 1 note difference between a natural minor and a harmonic minor. And only 2 notes different...

Anyone got harmonic and melodic minor caged stuff?

I could be wrong, but I don't think CAGED system accounts for "altered" scales such as harmonic minor. My understanding was that it was a purely diatonic system, meaning you could use it to make chords and scales that were within the key (modes are included here). If you already have your...
