some quick googling showed that some people have gone the aluminum route: Kramer Aluminum Neck Guitars Custom Metal Electric Bass - DWR Highly Custom Fabrication some stainless: $3000 Stash Stainless Bass Guitar that cannot be destroyed on stage | DamnGeeky I think that stainless...
I hope my photo links work. If not I may need some help. Progress Report! Board finished. Chassis fully drilled (I think) and painted. Transformers bolted on. Had some ugly soldering around the larger leads for the diodes, the IEC hole was hell to cut, and I scratched the paint a...
I've been mostly lazy this weekend and watched horror movies, but I did get some work done. I fixed the tube sockets the rest of the way and then I mapped out the main board, drilled the turret holes, and started to hammer in the turrets. None of what I drilled out is perfectly lined up, but if...
"Measure twice, cut once" only works when you have the correct tools. First little hiccup of the build. My hole cutter is 1/16th of an inch too small for my octal sockets. I had to run to one of the bigbox guys in town to get a stepperbit or unibit or whatever folks call them in order to...
It'll be 100W or around there. Four EL34Bs with three 12AX7s in the preamp. Since I've heard nothing but praise for the EL34Bs, I thought I would try them. All of the tubes will be Tung-Sols. EL84s are actually noval tubes and will fit in the same little sockets as the 12ax7s. They're lovely...
I decided to try my hand at a Marshall style build and after some looking around I decided to try one using Ceriatone's Yeti layout. I know I could get a better made amp for less money if I just purchased one from Nik at Ceriatone, but this project is about the personal satisfaction of sourcing...
http://www.sevenstring.org/forum/luthiery-modifications-customizations/249567-anyone-ever-built-amp.html That was the other amp building related thread lately
My ground up build is going to be based off of a Ceriatone Yeti. It wouldve been much cheaper for me to just buy a Yeti (and it would be better built most likely), but I wanted the experience of building it.
The trainwreck wasn't hard to build at all. Granted the chassis was pre-punched and I had half of the parts in a kit. I only had trouble at the end because one of my solder joints was bad and that was just a simple error that I fixed. Once I get a couple free evening's I will start my...
There was a similar thread somewhat recently. I'm working on a from-scratch build of a hot rodded marshall for my high-gain tastes. I made a trainwreck rocket clone from most of a kit that I got from a guy over at ampgarage.com as my first build.
I should also mention that the capacitors in amps can hold potentially lethal voltages after the power is off and must be drained before you start poking around in there. If you do any tinkering in an amp be sure to read up and watch videos of how to properly drain capacitors!
It is addictive and expensive. In addition to the resources listed above I would add ampgarage.com as well. The guys over there have been very helpful to me. I built a clone of a Trainwreck Rocket from a partial kit and I'm currently awaiting the transformers and chassis to start a from...
A few different companies have started marketing this stuff for guitar necks. Everyone uses a different name for the process, but from what I understand it is essentially cooking instead of kiln drying I think. It supposedly improves resistance to temperature and humidity change and has other...
I found this when searching for templates: 1959 Les Paul Build - Telecaster Guitar Forum That guy details the construction of almost every jig in his build. There are a ton of good jigs in there. When I finally grow a pair and start my build I'm going to try to document all the jigs I make...
Didn't Taylor or Martin use some synthetic compound in fretboards at one point? I've heard of glass being used on fretless guitars as well, so I don't think acrylic would be a stretch.
I know Brazilian Rosewood is CITES Appendix I. All the neotropical Swietinia Mahoganies are CITES Appendix II. All the Madagascar Ebonies are CITES Appendix III. What other woods used in instrument making are trade regulated via CITES? CITES has all the Appendices listed by species name...
