    I understand. But I'm looking for a baseline of what to shoot for in a bass. Some basses will be more tight and focused than others. That's where you guys come in.

    Pretty much what Wings said. I usually have a good idea about how I want the ambience to sound. Usually, if you just play in the same key and same scale, you're golden.
