I love the bottom strings played open but I try to avoid the higher ones. You can put so much more feels in fretted notes plus you can actually bend strings.

I feel kinda obliged to say that this is NOT the way to shut down your amp... Switching off the power of your amp without puttin on the standby (turning on means you can't play) could cause damage.

maxon od808 is pretty cool, although you need a good noise supressor and the difference it like mentioned, very subtle. Most people won't even hear the difference.

high gain amps like Mesa/Peavey/Bugera should do the trick. Bare in mind that album work is edited and you won't even get close to the sound you're looking for. For cab I'd go with an orange ppc412 or the Mesa oversized, but it really depends on which sound you want. Orange has a greater bas...
