variation! Scale exercises do get boring, but try to mix up scales with arpeggios. Approach the scale in different ways. Use a line from your favorite solo and practice it in all keys. This will make it much more fun.
Helpful thread. I used to think the top string couldn't be tuned higher than B! never thought it mattered on the strings.

String gauage and pick thickness has a lot to do with this as well! It also depends on your guitar's set up. Thicker picks allow you to pick through the strings easier. I would say between 1.00-1.2 or something like that is the best.
