I found a set of machine screws that matched a tap that I had and was able to install it! The cavity is a bit off for the pickup, so I still need some fine tuning with a file on the pickup tabs - but I can hear the chords in the low end now! AHA! Thanks everyone!

Yep, was used. I'll look into getting some different screws then before actually tapping it.

Doing my first ever pickup swap today, got the old one out just fine, removed from the mounting ring etc. Got the pickup wire threaded through the cavity and then went to put in the mounting ring when I found: 1.Stock screws too small (diameter wise) 2. The pickup holes are not threaded...

I'm good on the noise gates. My amp has a built in gate and noise reducer that I can use either/or and I also have a regular Noise Gate pedal as well that I put my daughter on when she plays (she has a strat and a cheap amp).

Just picked up an M-17 and researching pickup options. I'd like to go with actives (81-7 & 707 combo) but I'm not sure if the routes will allow for it. The guitar has humbuckers installed with rings, but I haven't been able to find much data on swapping the stock pickups for actives...
