How do your best sounding guitars (plugged in) sound unplugged?

Well I've been thinking about this the last few days. Sometimes I'll pick up a guitar and be like man, this thing is so quiet, it's kinda shit isn't it?! And then a bit later I plug it in to a 5150 or something and it's like whoa... maybe it's not that bad. And the opposite, I play one that's...

How do your best sounding guitars (plugged in) sound unplugged?

Your guitars that give you the best sound through an amp (mainly thinking high gain tones here), what do they sound like acoustically? Loud, quiet, resonant, bright, dark? If you only played unplugged, would you pick the same guitars as sounding the best?

Which is funny because that's where some of the best songs are. Oh well, more for us I guess, or something... In Flames are tricky though. There's always some good songs and some kind of crap ones. Except after Clayman when there's only crap. But picking a favorite album? Hm, I don't even know...

Which Engl combo should I get, which to avoid?

I think we can safely say that they have some different "families" of amps but then even within the family there can be differences. Like Powerball and Fireball should be pretty similar on paper, but then still seem to end up a bit different! But then I think the Savage family is pretty...

Which Engl combo should I get, which to avoid?

Maybe an unpopular opinion but I don't think there is an Engl sound as such. Their amps can sound pretty different to each other. So if there's something you know you like it might be safest to go with that. Or at least make sure you can try first if you go for something else.

What is your next guitar/gear purchase gonna be?

Hm, yeah maybe! Then there's the question, is there a difference between ABR-1 vs. Nashville style TOM? Something I've thought about is the sharpness of the saddles. It feels like a sharp saddle gives a different sound compared to a flatter saddle. And in that case I think the smaller area of...

What is your next guitar/gear purchase gonna be?

I think TOM is a safe bet, design wise. Not that other things can't sound as good, but many probably won't. TOM is kind of the golden standard to live up to. And certainly a stock Floyd Rose for example doesn't get there. Then materials and saddles make some difference too. You could screw up a...

Power amp recommendation for 1x12 cab?

Ha, imagine having a 4x12 with Celestion Redbacks or something and needing a 600W tube amp :D

Knowing what a key is is music theory. Knowing the name of the note B is music theory. Knowing the names of the strings is music theory. Anyway if somebody doesn't want to learn (more) theory then cool, whatever. The thing that makes me roll my eyes is dismissing something without considering...

About the "classic strat" I can for sure think of some improvements: Yes the neck heel sucks. Make it neck-through. Get rid of the silly trem thing. The fact that it doesn't even have a locking nut should be a sign that it's pretty useless anyway. Put some fixed bridge there instead. 24 frets...

Theory questions too small for their own thread

V7-i can often sound pretty old and cheesy because the resolution sounds kind of obvious and on-the-nose. It's typically reminiscent of classical music or something. That can be great but it's got a certain sound to it. You can say it "makes sense" but if the band isn't going for that sound then...

    Has streaming ruined "the album"?

I think the attitude of "boo hoo we can't make albums because social media" is ridiculous. Yes you COULD make an album if you wanted to. But what is the purpose? Is the purpose to try to be relevant on social media? To get fame and fortune? Or is it to make an artistic statement? If the main...

Well it's not strictly true of course because different factors determine weight. But if you compare similar guitars (ideally the same model) I'm convinced that generally lighter = brighter. Sure put a super bright single coil in a heavy guitar and it's gonna end up sort of bright but put that...

Has anyone gotten a chance to read the James Hetfield book "Messengers"?

Do you have sources for that Rammstein info? I always thought Richard had used rectos with miced cabs for a long time. But I'm always interested in new info/interviews etc. But I do think their tone peaked on Mutter and RR/R for sure.

I think light and heavy guitars sound different but not in a worse vs. better way. Things like that depend too much on the rest of the signal chain, AND how you use it. If you have a light guitar and a wimpy amp boosted by one of those Fortin cut-all-the-bass pedals, it's probably gonna sound...

I will never like everything and there's probably always gonna be bands that make me roll my eyes and think "posers...". I mean does anyone here truly NOT know any music that you think is lame? But I can approach this in different ways. I don't point at someone and say "you're a poser, get...

I think gatekeepers actually play a roll that's kind of important. Without gatekeepers everything would be a casual, shallow nightmare. Aren't gatekeepers sort of heroes in a way? Gatekeeping has a very negative connotation to it but I think it can be done in a nice and helpful way. Like of...
