I have never owned an 8 stringer, and I may buy one. The pickup alternatives I have been given are Lace X-bars, if I want passives, or EMG 808x if I want actives. I prefer passive pickups, but I haven't had the chance of playing a guitar with those EMGs, which are supposed to "bridge the gap"...
