Hey guys, first post here! I just bought my first seven string after 12 years of playing 6 strings (Schecter Loomis NT Black). Stumbled upon this site and just registered.

After reading endless threads about string tension, and playing with the 7 string standard sets (hated them, 7 string was too floppy), I decided to create my own custom set. I settled for 9-12-16-26-36-49-68 in E Standard. Also, I swear by Elixir strings. I would've chosen a .66 for the low B but Elixir doesn't make them. Bottom line is, I LOVE IT! :shred: Anyone else using this specific custom gauges or something close?

I don't use anything fancy, but I'll agree that elixir string are amazing, my favorite sounding strings, and they last ages too.

I use the 'custom light' set, 9-46 and I use a .060 for the low B. Elixir don't do a guitar .060, so I have to get a bass single string... which means that string costs the same as the whole pack of 9-46's... but whatever. Also I get one huge ball-end that sticks out the back of my guitar, haha.

I've just started using the 9-64 set from La Bella for Drop A# tuning on my 7 and it's seems pretty balanced. The gauges are 9-11-16-26-36-46-64. Before that I was using a 10-52 set plus a single 66 from D'Addario but I was tuning a little lower.

I use Elixir .068 for the bottom string and a set of .046-.009 for the rest. I play in drop A, and these gauges are perfect for that tuning.

This is awesome man, i haven't tried a PL on the D string yet! Is it any difference tone-wise? Or is it just feel?

Yeah I would under no circumstance play a plain D string. I hate plain strings over 18 or so. That set would never fly for me

I use 9-64 in standard tuning, 9-68 in drop A, so not too far off from the OP.

I even hate playing a 17 unwound string, gotta find the thinnest wound string for my guitar, but Elixir doesn't sell any wound strings under 22 I think.
