Yeah... testing out my:

MacBook
Garageband
SM57
Ability
Common sense
EQ

Just a short clip (maybe you've heard it already), maybe I will record the whole song. It kinda bores me though, it is rather metalcore-ish.

I layered tracks as suggested, I also found out that using two different guitars with two different amp settings sounds pretty crushing IMO (well who knows how I did with the mixing).

Oh and I know that the kick gets lost as hell in the mix, I tried EQing it differently and ultimately trying a new snare sample on FL, but it's still pretty bad in some parts.

<param name="bgcolor" value="#000000" />
</object></div></div>

Tell me what you think (I'm doing wrong)!

EDIT:

I attempted to redo the kick once again, with better results. I also added more delay to the ending sweeps and tweaked the EQ on a few of the tracks. Still bad but eh...

Hmm.. Guitars sound very thin. Try turning down the gain a bit and maybe.. can't believe im saying this.. Turn up the bass?

And ya those drum sounds

I think it sounds alright, there are definitely some eq issues with the drums...

I think if you wanted to just make this version sound better you should just do some level tweaking, if you don't want to mess around with the eq's

eq the bass drum to sound more punchy
and turn down the gain on the guitars and add a gate to them if you have one

and maybe a bit of delay and verb to the solo-type guitar parts

apart from that it sounds good

Well, I used yet another kick sample for the new version, but god I hate Fruity Loops. Hopefully EZDrummer is in the cards for me soon enough.

First off I gotta say that snare sounded horrific! It sounds like someone repeatedly slamming a car door. At least turn it down a bit.

Guitars didn't sound bad at all. I thought they cut through quite nicely considering how overpowering the drums are.

The bass drum sounds like wood, the guitars sound like they are thru a fuzz pedal, seriously need to turn the gain down and layer them up instead.

There are decent parts to this, the playing is good definitely, but the guitar sound needs a LOT of work to be honest.

Keep it coming dudes. Clearly I need it. :ugh:

No more on the drums though, because I know how bad they are. Even if I could get all the samples sounding good, it would still sound like mechanized crap.

Play around with the velocities of the drum hits and that'll improve things a lot.

If there's a velocity control for individual hits in Fruity Loops, I haven't found it.

The second version is sounding better but its still that fuzzy drive
EZ drummer would sweeten that mix up nicely tbh
what program are you using for the drums?

if I was you I would invest in a gate and DFH

Its still a good basis though :yesway:

Thanks for that tutorial!

It's weird, because in a room my tone never has that much gain, but I'll experiment with it.

Theres a reason behind that, place the microphone where you are and you'll not hear as much fuzz to it. Do the opposite and sit your ear directly next to the speaker, where the microphone is, and all of a sudden its fuzz city.

Room acoustics take away a lot of the fuzz to guitar tones because they absorb higher frequencies easily, but directly outside of a speaker, it has not had chance to diffuse, and also room reflections aren't phasing each other out. Theres a whole myriad of reasons why your tone sounds completely different through a mic as it does in the room.

Believe me, the best thing I ever found for recording guitar tones, was to turn gain down, and layer up tracks, even just double tracking can make a world of difference
