The search.

I’m on the never-ending search of finding a 2 channel tube amp, I feel obsessed…and im going into a downward spiral. It’s pretty much been on my mind for a good 5 weeks and its driving me insane. So I’ve turned to the trusty SS.org to help me on this endless endeavor to decide and put me out of my misery.

I predominately play experimental metal, but also like good cleans.
Tone wise I’m chasing something like Tony Danzas / Johnny Truant/ Into The Moat thick tone.

Would prefer not to use an overdrive/or boost pedal…as ive got an eq….but if I have to, doesn’t bother me. Just get a lot of buzz I find.

I’m chasing either a combo or little half stack with a 2x12 cab

These are my options I have gathered: (budget is a factor)

- Peavey 6505 combo
- Blackstar HT-5 ~ Orange 2x12
- Krank Rev Jnr ~ Orange 2x12
- ENGL Fireball ~ Orange 2x12
- VHT Pittbull 45 ~ (blackstar ht-distx)

Or on the other side of the fence:

- Line 6 Pod XT Pro
- Roland Cube

Should I go for a Orange 2x12 CB or Framus 2x12 CB?

Appreciate any info you have and you’d be saving a pen going into my face.

Anyone selling a VHT Pittbull Classic by chance??

I will say going from the Framus 212 to the Orange 212 was a huge upgrade. The Framus 212 feels very cheap and the tolex is like tissue paper. The Orange also sounds much fuller to me.

I run a VHT through an Orange and it is full of win.

As stated above. Nothing in the bunch you listed can beat the vht for tone and versatility.

Ogange cabs are better quality and give better tone than framus to me.

yeah but VHT wont be getting johnny truant (at least the last album) any time soon ;).

If you mean the guitar tone off "no tears for the creatures", when i asked reuben about what they used in the studio, he said it was their guitars straight into an Orange Rockerverb halfstack, mic'd up. No boosts, no pedals out front at all. Layered and then everything done post recording.

Thick tone, 2 channels? Grab an Orange Rockerverb:yesway:

unless you can turn the amp up, i wouldn't bother getting a tube amp and a 2x12.

if that's the case, then i'd get either the 6505 or fireball along with the orange cab.

both are great amps, but keep in mind, that the 6505 is WAY more present, fuller and thicker sounding than the fireball in a band situation. i've had both ;)

I'm not really going to chime in on which amp to get, but I will mention that I think it's preferable to get a head with a small cab over getting a combo for two reasons. One, having the two components separate usually allows the total weight to be split up so instead of carrying one heavy combo you can make two trips with two less heavy components (hopefully).

Second, and more importantly, the vast majority of tube combo designs come with the tubes hanging upside down behind the speakers....if you crank the amp to any sort of volume you will essentially be torturing your tubes. I really don't see why amp brands are still using this design.

Yeah, the Rockerverb is a great head too! I really dig it, when I'll be able to afford more than one head at a time that would sure be in my hands :yesway:

I currently run a Fyrette (VHT) UL through an Orange 4x12 and it is very cool but used to run a Fireball through an Orange 2x12 and that was definatly acceptable. On a budget i would go with that combo personally, FB>Orange2x12 :hbang:

it seems that many recommend the pittbull, but have asked a few and it seems this puppy lacks alot of gain- so its suggested to use a boost.

would this still be suitable do you think??
im actually unable to try it out because its on the other side of the country

its also come across that i could possibly be using a vader 2x12

The pitbull ultralead has more gain than you'd need. Not sure about the other vht's (fryettes).

If you like the orange stuff, the thundertverb is the head to get. It has 2 channels, loads of switchable stuff, ansd is thick and full, awesome yhead, it made jim root switch from rivera ;)

I can't imagine a VHT/Fryette having not enough gain...
With the Pitbull UL or the Sig X you can't go wrong.
The Rockerverb from Orange is one of my fav heads.
