<object height="81" width="100%"> <param name="movie" value="https://player.soundcloud.com/player.swf?url=http%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F45059623"></param> <param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param> <embed allowscriptaccess="always" height="81" src="https://player.soundcloud.com/player.swf?url=http%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F45059623" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="100%"></embed> </object> <span><a href="http://soundcloud.com/theo-goslett/deactivate">Deactivate</a> by <a href="http://soundcloud.com/theo-goslett">Theo Goslett</a></span>

or html 5:

drums could come up, less high end on guitars. keep working at it man, drums seem a little compressed. overall the whole song is really quiet as well.

Thanks guys, gonna tweak some more tonight, re-recorded the sloppy guitar parts last night to get them tighter. Still not totally satisfied, but it's progress.

How do I bring the drum volume up? The channel volume is maxed out.
Using cubase 5 here. Do I need to use a limiter on the drum channel?

I agree about the drums. If the channel is maxed out, then lower the guitar until its about even with the drums. Then just raise the master volume back up to a normal level.

Definitely turn the overheads up on the drums a bit.

If you're using Superior Drummer open up the VST and In the Mixer section Pull up the volume prong of the Overhead or whichever drum piece you want to up the volume on.

The second mix is way more balanced, although it would sound more balanced with the lead guitar riff in the center as opposed to the right, as it throws off the the chugs and sounds like the chugs are predominantly coming from the left. But when that lead goes away and its just that (sick) fast riff in the end it sounds really good, only those overheads are a bit too quiet.

It's superior, I'll play with the drum (overheads etc) stuff tonight. Thanks fiction.
ALSO, I'm realising that I haven't explained very well about what's going on here haha.

There are just two guitar tracks, one hard right and one hard left. After I did the second mix things got a lot clearer and I've realised how sloppy the guitars are. I'll Be working on that soon. Along with recording some bass and vox.

More low end. Don't fear the low end!

i'm guessing you are listening through speakers or headphones with a big fat low end, right? that was my problem back when my mixes sounded thin, because it sounded awesome and balanced on that one set of speakers...

edit: your updated version sounds better, actually! The drum compression is a bit too hard though. i would use a little less gain on the guitars, and give them a little more balls in the low end (careful when doing that, of course). And the guitars could still come down a bit to balance with the drums.

Superlux monitor headphones, They're quite bassy, But I've only EQ'd out 150-ishhz and lower in the guitars. I'm hesitant to add any more until I've recorded an actual bass. I'm not a fan of having the bass guitar buried in the mix. I wanna get some sweep slap going on ;P

Just listen to all the mixes, just kept getting better. The last one is really good man. That that early section Fiction was talking about sounds much better with the extra guitar and the synth added afterwards. Cool section at 0.50-1.10, should sound pretty nasty when bass is added.

I'm saying this as a guitarist, who mixes for a living.. As hard as it is to say, guitars are too loud :p Or at least too abrasive in the high mids. Get rid of some 3-4khz and clean that area up a bit. Trust me, it hurts to do.. but when those guitars are pulled back just a hair more that you feel comfortable THAT is when they are perfect ^_^
