I recently traded my Ibanez RGT6EXFX for a LTD F250 that came with HZ in them, and that was the first time I got my hands on those since 2005-07.

I love the way the bridge one sound, you can hear a hint of 81 in it, and it's still tight at C#. I can't get the neck to not sound muddy though, I can get a good lead sound from it but rythm is no bueno. I'll tinker with it some more, but no success for far.

Also got a Jackson Rhoads (JS32l) as partof a trade, slapped a 85 in the bridge, single volume no tone. Which is absolutely fantastic and I wish EMG offered a 85/60 set.

What is the scale length? How many frets? Also, what height are the pickups at?

25.5, 24 frets, for the height I need to measure as I usually adjust that until I am satisfied and not by measuring.

Fret the 24th fret and set them basically as close to the strings as possible without them touching in any way while the strings are vibrating, then adjust from there. The same rule of adjusting pickups applies here too, it's just that EMG's don't have the same magnetic pull as passives, so you can run them closer.

Gross. Do not do that. That is the reason EMGs have the bad reputation they have. Thanks, EMG. Why they'd print that in their literature and give people the impression they SHOULD be set like that is beyond me.

Sorry, but I've never once thought they sounded good like that and I love EMGs.

Nah, the low magnetic pull is only with active EMGs so those (HZ H4 pickups) are not to be set like that.

On the other hand, as Spaced Out Ace said, that's the way the EMGs sounds worse. Lot's of people like it, surez but only because they are looking for maximum gain and not looking for better clarity or dynamics.

Anyway, to each its own. If you like them REALLY close, good for you. There are no rules about tone but objectively speaking, you have more headroom if the pickups are not that close.

I do the same with actives. I set them between 3-4/32", as you would most pickups. Cranking them close sounds horrible and got the brand a shit reputation.

I also don't like my Emgs close, my experience is they sound much better backed off a bit.

They compress and clip unnaturally to me if they are too close.

I have my 57-7 like a few mil from the strings, sounds awesome.

I recently got an 81-7x/85-7x set, and haven't really been enjoying them. I think I'll try raising them up. Headroom is overrated.

I have the 66 up close, then I back the 57 away until the volume is matched across all positions.

My opinion of my 57/66tws is ever evolving. For the better usually.

This time I discovered my neck was a bit to straight and was choking the highs out. I didn't hear it unplugged. A little relief does wonders.

What I got was the super bright, detailed highs that everyone talks about. Holy crap!

Now I have to adjust the eq in my emg patches, dammit. Lol.

The jury is still out until i figure out the eq i need, but so far, I like them alot more now though.

On a different note; I finally tried the Duncan EMTY full set again after like 6 - 7 years of last trying them

Yeah just get a Het or JR set if you want that stupid hot active sound.

The 57 is nowhere near as hot as the 81 or even the 89 in my experience. Just don’t slam it up against the strings.
