I got really bored yesterday and decided to record this

So, here's the first mix:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9233272/Through Struggle (Cover).mp3

Guitars: Ibanez RGA121 with stock pickups
Tse808
Tse X50
and Travis's Mesa Impulses from the Sneap Forum

Bass: Pitch shifted guitar track going through my bass patch in Pod Farm

Drums: Stock Avatar kit with the Rogers Wood snare and a splash from Metal Foundry

Lemme know what you guys think :wavey:
Also, if anyone is interested in laying down vocals over this that would be sweet

Hmmm could be interesting I´ve never tried to shout over a AILD song before,
nice sound sound by the way, but I think you should work on the drums, and
turn it a bit louder.

Thanks, man! What in particular needs work with the drums, the kick, snare?

If someone else puts screaming on it, I can do the singing.

That would be great :agreed:

The bass drum sounds too... clicky, the punch is missing, maybe you lifted the highs too much or have an lowcut in it?
The snare sounds okay in general but needs some reverb or something and
maybe a little more "body", sounds also a little bit thin, but okay.
So if its okay, Tree sings and I will try to do the shouts. ^^

Cool, thanks for the tips! I'll try and mess around with it a bit :yesway:

That sounds great! i agree the bass drum is a bit clicky, but in a way it helps him cut trough the mix, so you may just want to attenuate this click a bit.
The guitar tones were cool? did you use the same settings for both sides?

Would it be okay if I put a little bit of my own style into the shouts? ^^

Nice, cause normally I do mostly lower growling stuff and its quite hard for
me to do those high metalcore shouts. xD
This for example is a newer recording.

Now that's a pretty sick guitar tone you got there =). I'd love to do vocals over that. PM me if you want an idea of stuff I've already done.

The snare sounds really nice, I use the N.Y. Avatar kit too but I haven't managed to get a nice hit like that out of it. I'd turn the snare up LOADS though. You'd be surprised at how loud you want it in metal. Also, I think you'll want to add reverb to the snare, and use the ambient mics a tad more, I find it gives the cymbals and snare a really nice ambient reverb sound that takes away from the triggered fakeness of the kit in general. I am a fan of splashy cymbal sounds though.

The kick's probably a bit clicky. I'd boost around 60-100hz just to bring the heft to it that it needs, and change the high end EQ to around 6.5khz (sounds a lot higher than that on your mix?) with a low Q. Then cut around 2-500hz to empty out the kick sound for the guitars' transients.

Your floor toms are getting a bit lost in the mix. If you want an idea on them it'll be easier to PM me, because toms are a MASSIVE pain in the arse to mix well and I coudl talk for hours on bussing and compressing them in Superior =/

hope that helps for the moment though =)

Thanks for the compliments and critiques! I boosted with a shelf rather than a bell on the kick, which may explain why there are too many higher frequencies slopping around.
Also, I'll PM you in a bit. I've always struggled with toms :ugh:

I´ll see what I can do tomorrow, yesterday I made some first tests.
If its finished we both send you the dry vocal tracks and you mix it?
Or how else do you want to do it, cause my vocal mixes suck I guess. xD

Yeah, go ahead and send me the dry tracks once they're done. I love mixing vocals.
I didn't hear anything wrong with how you processed the vocals on that other track though, don't beat yourself up like that!

But seriously, that was badass. I've actually downloaded it and listened to it a couple times already. I love hearing new mixes of songs I already know really well. Will bump in car.

Shit and you got that tone all with freeware? Jesus it sounds superb for what I think freeware would sound like.
