Belated NGD: Something Old and "Eerie"

Hear hear. Bringing it back is the only thing they could do to entice me to buy a new Jackson.

Nah, I'd still buy one. I love Jackson, I've had more of them than any other brand, by a long way.

I always wanted a Jackson in their Eerie Dess Swirl finish, and I saw an old DK2 on Reverb for a reasonable price and jumped at it.

It was looking kind of sad:



Dry fretboard, broken pickup ring, some oxidation on the frets. However, these are a fantastic modding platform. It got the full refurb treatment:

- EMG 81X + 2x SX
- Full solderless wiring
- Relocate volume control to tone position and fill the extra hole
- Metal low profile pickup ring
- Mostly black hardware (some parts are hard to find, but the black + chrome works)
- 1000 series Floyd
- Stainless steel Floyd Rose bolts
- Titanium string lock blocks
- Push-in arm
- Usual fret polish and fretboard cleaning

Plays great! Set it up in D standard and it rips.

Not so great, there were two headstock breaks (the tip and through the lowest string tuner hole). But they appear to be well-repaired so I'm not going to complain too much. However, sometimes when you rescue something old there are surprises.

Some surprises are good though. Basically zero fret wear on this.

My biggest problem: now with 9 guitars I have run out of guitar stand space. I told my wife I'd sell one, but sssshhhhh I don't think I will.

Wall hangers. My wife's favourite guitars hang in living space, while anorher 8 are hung in the office and a spare bedroom. Thus I get away with having 27 guitars in the house (plus four under construction).

Great work! Always loved the EDS finish. I have a Kelly with the same. Looking for one of the Crimson Swirl one's but no luck at the minute.

I would consider buying replacement pads and just finding a belt sander to size them properly. This is what I had to do on my RG7620, it worked out fine and the bare metal goes well with the chrome and black.

Everyone thinks of the Professional line, with features that rivaled USA Jacksons to the point that they discontinued them because the company thought they ate into sales, as the golden age. However, in the 2000s a DK2 could be had for what... $600-800? And the used market was flooded with them until the past ~ 6 years and they went cheap. Hell, the X series at that time was also MIJ.

My first "real" guitar was a DXMG and my dad got it used for me circa 2004 or 5 for $250.

So, as a 30-something with disposable income I just buy stuff I wanted as a teen.

I'm also sounding like a boomer talking about gas prices in 1969.

Check out the Gotoh GHL nuts. I just checked the schematics with the Schaller R3 and the Gotoh is over a millimetre shorter than the Schaller/Floyd. And it comes with shims in case it's too shallow.

Could be an option, there will be a radius mismatch but Jacksons frequently have one anyway due to a 10 in radius nut with the fretboard starting at 12 in.

So, after some fussing around trying various nuts I was about to say screw it, sand down the shelf, and put an OFR nut on.

However, this is apparently an exact dupe of the BH43 nut on these: https://www.guitarpartsfactory.us/LN43-B-Black-43mm-Locking-Guitar-Nut. At least when it comes to height and string spacing. The screws it comes with are crap though and I reused the ones it came with.

No idea how well it'll last, but it appears to be fine enough quality. Posting in case anyone else runs into this.

The real Floyd nuts are taller and would necessitate grinding them down to the proper height, or removing material from the shelf. Unless the 1000/special nuts are shorter. I'll have to look at them again, but I thought they were the same height as the Schaller-made originals.

I actually prefer the low profile metal rings, it's a mod I always do when guitars have pickup rings. They're low profile enough to almost feel like they're not there!

Where did you get the low profile metal rings? I've also noticed that jacksons pickup ring screwholes are different spaced than other brands...

The black upgrades look really good! What were they thinking when putting chrome hardware in these
