So, I bought the seagate 1.5TB HDD. Because of the whole (gibibyte =/= gigabyte) you automatically loose about 200GB of space (Windows see it as a 1.33TB HDD). Well, thats "normal" and so I can swallow it... After formatting the HDD (default allocation space, NTFS) it showed that about 300GB (don't remember the exact amount, I hit the error-check button by accident and it's taking forever ) was being used... Yes, used. So I'm left with roughly 1TB of free space. WTF?????!?!

I mean, 1TB is still A LOT of fucking space for my purposes, but still, 300GB is a whole fucking lot as well... Again, the HDD was formatted so it's EMPTY. How in the fuck is 300GB being "used"? Even if it is some other technical thing I'm forgetting about, this is still bullshit... I hope it is some random Win XP 64bit error or something. I'm installing Win 7 soon anyways...

Help!!

(pics as soon as the fucking scandisk finishes. 227,639,162 free clutsers processed!!!)

Do you have system restore enabled? And what does your virtual memory settings look like?

Well, this isn't actually 'losing' anything. Manufacturers just use gigabytes instead of gibibytes because the numbers are bigger, and bigger numbers always sound better to people who don't understand.

Exactly! Same applies with the 299.99 =/= 300.00 mentality.

What shows up as on the disk when you open it in explorer?

I just bought a WD 1.5 TiB'er last week to put in an external enclosure and it worked fine, 1.36 TB formatted.

Yeah i lost hundreds of gigs to Vista's System Restore facility.

Once you turn it off it deletes all the saved points and gives you your space back. Simply turn it back on and create 1 new point and you're good to go again. Periodically turn it off and on again to get the space back like every month or couple of months etc.

If it's already off then who knows.........

Got 1,33TB free now... thank-fucking-god...

Want to know the solution? I re-formatted the HD this morning and the space taken was gone... lol

Now, back to filling the HD up with cheap asian porn and HD movies!
