I mix up what key I write in all the time, but I seem to always stick with the modes of harmonic minor. What does everyone else do when you get stuck in a rut like that? I tend to write better when I have structure so just writing a riff with no scale or arpeggio in mind usually doesn't turn out great for me

Try something in the Major Key. Doesn't have to be metal does it? If you can allow yourself to write in a given key, regardless of style, that same ability will carry over into your primary style of music.

If you're a big fan of harmonic stuff, try the harmonic major. I think its a major scale with a minor 6th degree.
