there's a study for every theory, prooving it right.

that said:

caffeine has been shown to aid in the release of lipids from fat cells.

see, the battle in burning fat is not burning the fat cells (that's impossible), rather, it's emptying the fat cell (or 'fat bag') of it's contents. You have to:
1) get it to release the contents, and
2) do something to burn it.

The body simply responds. it never does anything w/o a need to. It's Demand and Supply, not supply and demand.

Exercise places the demand for fat and carbs as fuel, so you'r body does what it takes to supply the fuel.

caffeine aids in lipid release into the blood stream, so that your body can burn it.

but if you're not doing physical activity, you're body may not burn as much as you'd like.

further, caffeine is a stimulant which jacks you up. Consequently, you might put more into your work out.

a cup of coffee before a work out can help release fat so you can burn it, and inspire you to squeeze out some extra intensity so that you can then burn it.
