Agreed. But on the flip side, I also find exercise does a lot to mitigate the negative effects of caffeine. If I'm running and/or lifting, I can have at least 3 cups a day before I start to notice lower quality sleep or anxiety creeping in. If I'm just sitting around all day working on my computer and teaching, two cups is pushing it...
I have developed a high tolerance and it hasn't been healthy. Then getting off of it has been hard. I chalk that more to the frequency and the comforting habits than the quantity through. It's almost like a cigarette to me. I get the thought of reaching for coffee a hundred times a day. It must be a coping mechanism at this point or as you point out part of the anxiety.

I started to put oat milk to my coffee a while ago and it's pretty good. You just have to find one which makes the mouth feel of the coffee thicker and doesn't taste like you just put oat porridge in there. My favorite ones so far in here are Oatly iKaffe Barista edition and Valio Oddly Good.

The barista oat milk from Lidl (grey carton) is also pretty good, almost identical to the Oatly and costs only 1.49€. My wife drinks that so I use that as fallback if the normal milk runs out, and the difference is minimal.

I mean, of all the milk alternatives, oat seems to be among the creamiest and maybe the most unobtrusive flavor wise.

But when I'm not rocking black, it's heavy (dairy) cream or bust. The richness is unparalleled. Like BBQ personalities say, fat is flavor.

And no sugar!

I went through a phase like this when I was in grad school and working multiple part-time teaching jobs. Every waking minute I wasn't at work or school was spent studying or practicing and amidst all that stress "reaching for a cup" was definitely a comfort habit.

I got into this coffee alternative called Teecino which is basically fruit, nuts, and herbs that have been roasted and ground up. After midday or so, I would just brew that stuff instead of coffee.

No, it's not the same as coffee, but it's hot, bitter, and full-bodied liquid in a cup, which for me was close enough to fill the niche. Plus it's alkaline, which cancels out some of the negative effects of coffee on the digestive system. The vanilla nut flavor was my favorite.

I like the oatly batista one a lot, but for me the best has been Califia Farms Barista Blend oat milk. I noticed that once you pour the first few ounces out, you can shake the container even when it's cold out of the fridge and it will froth like crazy, so if you control your pour, you can get full thickness milk and then top it with the foam with a lighter touch pour. Oatly does the same but Califia just seems to have a bit better performance for me and seems to color the coffee a tad better.
