Backstory:

Deciding I really don't have much use for an 8 = Selling my SC-608B

Plastic guitar sounds like plastic even if it costs 5 grand and glows = Selling my Ibanez Jem20th

Playing a JP6 for the first time at a guitar center = Heaven

Here's my dilemma, I'll have the cash for either a JP6 or a JP7, but I've never played the 7, and the 6 was just so heavenly. I've always considered myself a 7 player and most 6's feel like they're missing a string, but at the same time, I'm worried that the JP7 will just feel like another djent machine in contrast to the JP6 which felt like a work of art in my hands. The neck was so small and set up perfectly, <3 piezos and wilkinson (Especially after dealing with the edge pro in the Jem and my Ibby 1527), so I'm definitely wanting a EBMM JP of some sort. My friend keeps telling me to not pussy out on him and get a 7 but after playing the 6 (and having not played a 7 before) I'm just not sure. The obvious thing to do would be to go play a JP7 but I live in the middle of nowhere PA, seeing the JP6 was like a dream come true, odds of finding a 7 to play around on are slim so I'm gonna have to order it online.

So those of you who have played the JP7, convince me that it's still as amazing to play as the 6 or better.

Everything that has 7 instead of 6 is better

so if you like the JP6 you'll definitely even more like the 7 :yesway:

Make it worth my while to convince you.

Seriously, do you own damn homework. I don't know what you want out of a guitar.

If this is any incentive, it's probably the best playing 7 string I've ever played.

Apart from that, what Matt said :agreed:

I think "homework" is what I'm doing by getting the opinions of those who have played them before :p

For clarification, I'm not asking for people to research the guitars for me, I've done that already. I just want to know what others think of them who have played them because I haven't.

My advice is that if you think 6 is too few and 8 is too many, then get a 7 and simply get used to it. It's not gonna feel exactly like a 6, but it's damn close, and if you need that extra string for your music then It'd make no sense to not have it.

Musical instruments aren't really about a universal golden ratio of goodness, it's mostly got to do with getting used to your instrument, getting used to your pick, getting used to your preferred picking method etc. All the most proficient players use vastly different guitars, setups, picking techniques etc., but they chose what felt good to them and then just practiced that from then on.

And as a side note, if the JP7 was in any way inferior to the JP6, I think Mr. JP would've done something about it by now :)

Why wouldn't you? You still have a 6 string, but with the option of using the low B as well.

EDIT: Also, if you're selling a JEM20th, you should pull enough profit to ge a BFR. So think JP6 with an extra string plus about twice the amount of sexy.

They are pretty much the same guitar with +1 string. I would get the 7 string personally but that's my opinion.

On a 7 string message board almost every one is going to tell you to go with the 7 though :p

I'll be the odd man out and say "go grab that KXK Sii-7 for $1750 in the classifieds!"

Or buy Darren's JP7 if it's not sold yet.

Having played a wide variety of 7-strings, I can honestly say the EBMM JP7 has THE best neck carve on a 7 I've ever touched. :agreed: It's not that big of a stretch from the JP6 to the JP7, the one thing I would recommend is swapping the bridge pickup although if you're getting one of the newer ones with the liquifire instead of the d-sonic 7 I can't comment, I just didn't dig the tone of the bridge with the d-sonic 7. :2c: The playability on the JP7 is superb though, so much so that on my custom Oni I requested that Dan carve the neck using the same carve as a JP7!

P.S. I've had two in Mystic Dream, that finish is totally worth the upcharge IMO, it looks amazing in person!

The JP7 has the most comfortable neck i've ever played. I love it. I'm just not so hot on basswood these days, which is why i'm selling mine.

EBMM uses fantastic woods on these. The first Petrucci i played was a bare-bones JP6, and it blew me away... it was the loudest, most resonant guitar i'd ever played unplugged. The arm contour and neck profile are amazing.

As others have said, if you liked the JP6, you'll love the JP7.

Try checking all those dealers out based on which ones are near you and maybe you can find a JP7 to try out and formulate a better opinion of the actual neck yourself. :yesway: Always better to go by playing one than someone else's opinion as not everyone's taste of the same neck will be identical.

Holy crap can't believe you just did that for me thx so much haha.

:yesway: No prob man, I saw there was one dealer that shows up in Bethlehem but I don't see EBMM on their site anymore so it's possible the dealer list it out of date. Your best bet is to check out their sites or call them to see who has a JP7 in stock.

Not sure how bad the ride is from Bethlehem but if you're up for a road trip, check out Chuck Levin's Washington Music Center in Maryland... I kid you not they have DOZENS of JP7s in stock in just about every finish they make!!! It's nuts, that's where I played my first JP7 and that is what prompted me to buy one. :D Highly recommend them. :agreed: If you go there, ask for Brian Meader, that guy is the shit! He let me pull out about 6 of them just to see how much they varied from guitar to guitar and the quality is did not vary at all, always nice to have more than one to check out though as the tone can vary piece to piece and that's where checking them out in person from a huge batch is always nice. :)
