It is a bullshit situation, but as someone else pointed out, we don't know the particulars of the employment contract. What the school did may be completely legal, however mind-blowingly ignorant it may seem to us.

It's probably safe to say that most of us are comfortable with death metal. We at least know people who play it and know that death metal musicians aren't bad people. As musicians, we recognize the fantasy aspect that can exist in music where the songs don't have to be a direct reflection of the psyche of the performer.

The general pop-music-listening-to populace rarely encounters any of that type of narrative-distancing outside of Beyonce's alter ego... and these are the same people whose send their kids to school and freak the fuck out (however unreasonable it may be) if a teacher there represents a perceived counterculture that they don't want their kids exposed to. Their taxes pay the salaries, so a large enough angry mob will evince a kneejerk "customer is always right" reaction to cost someone their job.
