I generally don't listen much to female vocalists, which is wierd since I really like girls who sing. Well.
As far as I'm concerned, no one comes close to Björk, but +1 to a few of the other ladies mentioned. (Tori, Anneke, Imogen etc.)

A few of friends of mine are into them. I've only heard a couple of songs yet, but keep that hand ready.

Funny, because I think the chick from d:s (operatic goodness) is utterly amazing, and the hipster from IWaBO is abhorrently awful, both so far as screams and melodic singing goes.

I mean, people give Angela from Arch Enemy a lot of shit for being one-dimensional or whatever, but her growls are so much better and more focused than IWaBO, not to mention the 1000x better music. What is the appeal of this band again?

Not metal..but there will NEVER...and I mean EVER be a female singer badder that Chaka Khan. The woman hits lows many men couldn't match, higher notes than most women could attempt, she's destroyed speakers and sound equipment with her voice, she literally doesn't need to be anywhere near the mic to outsing everything else on the stage, and the riffs and runs she pulls are practically inhuman. She's sung everything from country, jazz, pop, r&b, contemporary, rock and beyond and there has yet to be a younger singer on her level, and there probably never will be. Oddly enough even though I'm a metal "singer", she's my biggest vocal influence.

Apart from her, Diamanda Galas. That woman is THE voice of Hell and insanity.
