hmmmm GNR's estranged is still one of my favorites, ( when slash is conveyor belt on sidewalk) , Zakk wylde's "no more tears" first come to mind, but then again, ANYTHING off Heartwork demands respect!!!!
Great seeing mentioned "ordinary world" by Duran duran....that is a cool solo....Mine from my younger days...
"Into the fire" Dokken "Silent lucidity" Queensryche "Ladies night in Buffalo" David Lee Roth "Still of the night" Whitesnake "Madelaine" Winger "Addicted to that rush" Mr. Big "Limelight" Rush...
So many more but those are the ones that just rolled off the top of my head...
on a pretentious note.... erotomania by dream theater.... i worshipped that solo for years! lol
otherwise, alot of what you guys have been saying..... one not said is the man in the box solo from alice in chains.... the good solos are usually the ones that you can sing along to, in my opinion.
Europe's The Final Countdown. That was actually the first band with lots of hair I listened to. Remembering by school years I should have been something like 13/14 by then.
When I was 12-13 years old I first heard Fear of the Dark by Iron Maiden. Dave Murray's solo on that song was one of the reason I later on picked up playing guitar.
Petrucci has had some of my favorite solos. Ever. I think his tone now a days is a bit too over saturated and effect heavy though. I liked his tone around Awake and Metropolis pt II the best. He has such great phrasing and sense of melody.
One of my earliest memories is seeing slash outside of the little church in the desert soloing. I think that had something to do with me being a guitarist, but it's weird that I don't like slash that much.
Not my childhood but my teen years when I actually became aware of the existence of good music:
David Gilmour's Comfortably Numb Matthias Jabs's Rock You Like A Hurricane, both Intro and Solo Dimebag Darrell's Floods Felder, Walsh, Frey and Henley's acoustic Hotel California Slash's November Rain Krik Hammett's Dyers' Eve
On the Turning Away - David Gilmore Still gives me goosebumps. Other than than that...
Echo - Joe Satriani Manhattan - Eric Johnson Tender Surrender - Vai Orion - Kirk Hammett Overemphasizing - Ian Thornley
Live video of Overemphasizing for those who haven't heard it... The album version doesn't have strings... The album "...In Loving Memory of" is one of my all time favs.
I remember hearing the solo in Duran Durans Ordinary World when I was still 3 and learning to walk. Whenever I hear that solo I'm reminded of the smell of freshly washed floors.
Then, when I was six I got a best of CD with Europe and I immediately loved the song Stormwind and I remember liking the guitar intro and guitar solo especially (John Norum = God!).
Then there was Tekken 3 - Jins Stage (no clue who composed it, there were a few guys working on that soundtrack) All the songs with guitar-ish sounds on FFVII Iron Maiden - Fear of the Dark and From Here To Nowhere Nightwish - Nemo
