Tough one, but the five that come to mind for me right now are...

Guthrie
Andre Olbrich from Blind Guardian
McLaughlin
Robert Fripp/Adrian Belew (I had to group these two together since they complement each other so well)
Dan Mongrain from Martyr

Of course there are many more that are awesome/important to me but these five spring to mind with little thought.

damn, I have a lot of favorite guitarists. this might be easier for me to answer if I thought of it in terms of who's abilities I'd want, since my choices would be final. in order to prevent getting bored, I'd need to be able to pull-off anything I could imagine or hear. SO --if I could effectively assimilate the abilities of 5 guitarists under my own influence matrix-style, they would be:

-jeff loomis: metal aesthetic
-norman brown: improve, theory, harmony and jazz chops
-joe braccio: over 40 years of classical guitar and the guy can sight-read music like it was his first language
-gianni serino: clean technique, excellent slap chops
-chris broderick: to reinforce metal, classical & theory chops with a modern aesthetic plus his two-handed stuff which i like a lot.

I'm not necessarily all about speed, even though all those guys are machines in their own right. however, it's something i severely lack along with other things like; advanced theory, fret-board mastery, improve/comping, understanding of the harmonic series.. basically everything imo, that is essential but somehow beyond my attention span when attempting to become advanced .
with all that under my belt, i could eek out a decent living playing guitar & bass all day over multiple income streams while having a fantastic time.

i think. :2c:

Edit - not sure why I didn't put EVH. I was thinking of bands I listened to most and just listed their guitar players, even though I listen to Van Halen a lot.

I'm pretty sure there's other threads on this already but oh well.

No order, I guess mine would be:

Ihsahn
Jari Maenpaa
Muhammed Suicmez
Chuck Schuldiner is a given
Karl Sanders
Steffen Kummerer
Christian Muenzner
Paul Masvidal
Daniel Gildenlow, maybe not as a guitarist but as a composer in general

Picking favorites is hard for me

Billy Howerdel
Nuno Bettencourt
Steven Wilson

Honorable mentions go to:
Richard Z
Steve Lukather
Christophe Godin
Michael Hedges

Tough question for me really. If you asked me who my favorite bass player is though, no question, Tony Levin.

I can't come up with any.
When it comes to music I enjoy I don't really care about the individual player, per se, so unless I really like the band I'm largely unaware of their members names/what they play.

In no specific order:

Will Swan (Dance Gavin Dance. Regardless of where you like their music, he's an amazing guitarist)
Dave Knudson (Minus The Bear, former guitarist of Botch)
Sam Halliday (Two Door Cinema Club, even when his leads aren't complicated, they stand out, and he has some solid tones.)
Mathieu Pascal (Gorod)
Keith Merrow
Ola Englund (Feared, other bands that you can Google to learn about)
Jeff Loomis (Nevermoooore)

And Lil Wayne :spock::nuts::agreed::fawk:
