are they really focused on this? id think they'd be more into the mockery of the last supper and the Saturn worship
I regretfully spend enough time on Facebook and Reddit to see that all of the above has gotten some jimmies rustled. People not understanding what the imagery was supposed to mean, calling the Olympics woke, crying about the last supper that wasn't a last supper, crying about the the "bad performances", crying about drag performers, etc etc. You know, like normal facebook stuff. From the wasteland that is facebook. At this point, facebook is just the place where old grumps go to shout into the void about wokeness. Any normal person in the real world I've spoken to seemed to land in a "the ceremony had something for everyone, so that's pretty cool" kind of place.

And also like, this is the Paris Olympics. Do people not have any idea that Parisian and French culture in general is historically considered to be a little wacky and lightly subversive at its basest level? This isn't the Atlanta Olympics, grandpa.

Found a video of the performance sans commentary:

As far as all of the hullabaloo specifically over this, I'm a conservative Christian (and a grandpa for that matter) and oy vey. Dusty old baptist's gonna dusty old baptist, and France gonna France. It's no wonder most people don't take Christianity seriously anymore. That said, Vive Gojira!

I'm the odd man out because The Link is my favorite with Terra Incognita being second.

Those two are my favorites too but in the opposite order. FMTS is cool too but I prefer The Way of All Flesh over it. The rest aren't that great, but compared to the competition they're pretty good.

Their more recent material doesn't do much for me, but I've seen them live four times and they were great every time. The first time was during their 2009 Way of All Flesh tour, in a tiny venue with a <500 capacity, and the most recent was headlining Bloodstock Open Air.

This has got to be one of the most badass, metal performances I have ever seen. F*cking incredible for the band to have played this at the Olympics.
Just a few fun facts as to why this is insanely metal and cool, beyond Gojira being metal as f*ck and incredible live performers:

- They are performing a rendition of a French Revolution era protest song
- They are standing on the building where Marie Antoinette was held captive prior to her beheading
- Marie Antoinette was beheaded in front of that building
- They have headless mannequins in most of the windows of the building
- The fire, the red ribbon burst, the red smoke

It is just so. damn. metal. :metal:

The dude that said this was real life Dethklok is spot on

Also Magma and Fortitude rule. Although IIRC they've been saying the next album will be heavier. And if this performance is anything to go by, I believe it.

Yeah, I was THRILLED that they played. I was walking around the house talking about it as if I were the one playing, lol. I was just beaming with pride, and my wife and no fucking clue why I was so happy about it. I was like. "Gojira. The OLYMPICS. They're a metal band. And they are playing THE OLYMPICS. That's insane! They're metal! It's Gojira playing the Olympics! France is awesome! I wonder who was in charge of this. I wanna see his playlist...." And then she'd walk out of the room, and I'd pick right back up when she walked back in. It's been going like this for about 72 hours now, haha.

I finally found a way to watch it without the commentary.

I don't know if this is available outside of Finland, but anyway - you set the language to English, then there's no commentary. Gojira is at 46:35.

... and holy crap, I haven't gotten goosebumps like this from a piece of music in a long time. Just awesome.

It is sad that the media (and therefore most people) will take away the cringe of the rest of the ceremony and not “wow, metal doesn’t suck”. Between that and all the commentary over the live cast it almost feels like Gojira were robbed of a huge moment. I don’t even know what to compare it to, and I’m not sure we’ll ever get it again.

C’est la vie I guess.

As many others mentioned here, it is so insane to see Metal going Mainstream. There was a time growing up , when to have a metal performance in my city of birth required certification from 'culture police' to see it now represented Internationally in an event like the Olympics is pretty insane.

Haters gonna hate. I read today somme comments here and there.
Gojira panel was satanic, cliché. No metal on tv? bad. Metal on TV? bad....
Bacchus/katerine was a shame for christians
LGBT segment was cringe...
Katerine apologized today (because nowadays you gotta apologize for everything) to the christians etc...
the panel was not even the holy supper, it was also taken from pagan ceremonies....
but yeah ,it's not like it hasnt been done before. Of course we're in France, you can do a lot. No chance you'd see that in some other countries....

No wonder why that's where we are at right now in the world....
