and for me the most beautiful movie score ever written is Big Fish. It's so powerful and means everything in the movie. I was a little bit pissed when LOTR win best music. Just a little...

In Bruges (I don't know if the score was written specifically for the film or not, but it's interesting.)

The soundtrack that Explosions in the Sky composed for Friday night Lights was incredible.

I'm also a huge fan of scores by Yann Tiersen. Amélie had some beautiful stuff in it.

Volver by Alberto Iglesias

A strange mix of cartoon, spy, latin and melancholy music.

Runner Up would have to be:

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis

Dreadful film with one of the most beautiful and solemn scores I've heard.

The Fountain - by Clint Mansell, Kronos Quartet, and Mogwai. It's worth half the movie.

^This, 28 Days Later, 25th Hour, and anything by John Williams. There are a few others I find pretty stimulating but I can't think of them offhand.

If you liked this go listen to Godspeed You! Black Emperor. The music from the first sequence (after he wakes up in the hospital) is from one of their songs called East Hastings....amazing stuff.
