I have a hard time taking time for myself if I have other things to do. Work, family stuff, yard work, studying etc. If I don’t have a free calendar then it’s maybe a 3-4.

If everything is done and I’m feeling it, probs 9-10.

All through high school and college I was at a 10 and basically all I ever did in my free time was play guitar until I went to sleep.

Now I'm still at a 10 and love playing, but I have more stuff going on that keeps me from playing 6+ hours a day like I used to. I've also been getting into recording over the last year-ish, so my "music time" is shared between that and regular playing now. If I get burnt out on one, I can turn to the other for a few days and come back with fresh ears.

Usually varies between a 5 & 10 depending on how effectively I can translate the music in my head to the fretboard.

This thread made me want to play guitar. I went for some easier stuff, because it's funner when you don't have to think about it. I quit when I was out of breath and sweating like SRV. I'll go with a 12 at the moment.

It’s been a consistent “10” for me since 1988 and in that time I’ve never experienced even a moment of frustration with the instrument. Pure joy.

It could be that I chose, early on, never to put too much pressure on myself to progress, but rather to just take it as it comes. Sure, I could have been a better player by now if I’d taken lessons or focused more, but then my enjoyment might have suffered.

It's been one of my greatest joys in life for over 48 years. There have been times when I was touring that I needed a rest from it to balance life out, when show dates would pop up when I had family events planned, and that kind of stuff really irks me as family is important, but when my life is full of balance, everything falls right into place and everything remains enjoyable. You have to prioritize rest, human connection, and respite in order for the things you love to remain lovely. Being a husband and a father, and now grandfather makes me a better musician and being a musician makes me a better husband, father, & grandfather.

Def a 10 for me. Probably because I don't have enough time to play, and I'm no longer playing live. But I'd say playing live is easily the most fun I've ever had. The endorphins of sex, and adrenaline of sports, and the emotion of both laughing and crying. I miss it nearly every day, and can't wait to get off the capitalist hamster wheel and start living again.

10.

If you like guitars but you don't like to play, your subconscious probably sees guitars as furniture that you enjoy collecting.

I'm about a 4. It took me awhile to finally be honest with myself and realize that my joy actually comes from amps and pedals than actually playing. Now I don't really feel guilty about buying gear even though I suck at playing. It's the gear that makes me happy.

Playing guitar has been integral to my life, like breathing.
When I don't play for extended periods I get itchy and start looking for ways to get my hands on a guitar.
It's an obsession.
And when I get that tone, mmmm, heaven. Like a drug.
Perhaps you too have heard it, the one that makes you disappear into the music the seems to just happen while you take the ride.
Yeah, I play guitar for that. Every day.

On a scale of 1-10, how much do you like playing guitar?

I would probably only put myself at a 4. I don't really like it. I like music and I like gear but playing guitar is more something I have to do to get my music across than something I enjoy doing. I mostly just have fun playing when I come back to it after a break, maybe playing once every few weeks or so. More than that and it's just kinda boring. A chore. Playing in a band is fun but mostly because of the social stuff, hanging out, talking music and gear etc.

I feel like compared to most here I'm probably pretty low on this "guitar enjoyment scale", but I don't really know? I'd be interested in hearing how much other people actually like playing.

Wouldn't bother playin if the best you can muster is a 4.

I wouldn’t go quite that far. When I was younger and feeling so inadequate as a player, I took it as a challenge and set small, reachable goals incrementally over the next few years to reach, and then set about reaching them one at a time. My philosophy is “bite off more than you can chew, then start chewing”. We all learn at different paces, and have differing times available to dedicate to this craft.

“How to eat an elephant” Is arguably better...
Find some harmonic concepts that will “play themselves “, improvisation and composition inherently linked to technique will lead to a natural production of music, it’s a language after all, and all the ideas already exist out there in the ether...

5-6 when practicing, 6-8 when actually playing music, and 7-9 when composing.
