I had my high school phase of extreme practicing hours too.
In year 10 and 11 (10th/11th grade), 3-6 hours a day on school days and 8-12 hours on days I had off.
Unless you're extremely introverted, have practically no social life and have no responsibilities/obligations, it can't last forever really.

I've got shit to do, more of a social life and I wanted to develop in other areas of life too, and all of this eats into my time I could be playing.
But I don't mind, because I enjoy being a more well rounded person.
These days, it's more like 30-90 minutes of playing on most days, and maybe 3-4 hours if I'm lucky on some other more rare days.
I can't say I really do much in the way of technical exercises anymore when I practice/play guitar, but I definitely make an effort to be using the metronome almost daily when just writing some riffs/practicing some riffs.
Even just 15-20 minutes of metronome work a day DOES A LOT for your playing in general.
Everyone should be doing it to get more out of their practice sessions

I feel like I used to practice technique and getting "better" at my instrument a lot more when I was a teenager compared to now (I'm 23), but I still play every day. These days I spend most of my playing time writing or practicing my band's material. We practice 3-4 days a week and I get in as much individual practice time as I can when I'm home form work.

About 1-2 hours per day. I've never practiced guitar since the first two months of playing guitar. After that, I just started writing my own music inspired by what I listen to. Generally the 1-2 hours of playing consists of writing or just playing through old music I've written. I've never had any desire to learn other people's music or to sit for hours practicing leads and such.

When I can, and when I have ideas for songs that I need to work on and/or that I can't yet play. And when the other guitarist who's really into death metal brings me something I can't play yet. Will occasionally learn a cool bit of a song if I like it. Got the Jeff Loomis DVD and am working my way through it really slowly, it's good.

not much anymore. i might possible play 30 minutes a day. that's max.

but...

i used to practice all day every day. just give me the guitar and i'll play it all the time.

and still if i'm in a band i might play for 3 to 5 hours at a time. it's like i got where i needed to go and now that i'm here i'm thinking, "now what?"

I have a job, so I have to juggle my practicing and my drinking. I'd recommend not mixing them

I just try to pay the guitar every day. If it's for 30 minutes or 3 hours either way, pick it up every day. I keep it next to me so if usually when my hands are free i pick it up.
Usually i am just practicing unplugged 90% of the time.
Also it's not so much as how much you practice as what you practice.
A lot of the time I will just play a few of the same licks over and over or scales or picking sequences that i need to work on and that might be it.

This wins the thread. Not that this was meant to be a thread for bragging (I'm not saying that), but i can't begin to count the number of times i've heard people brag about the number of hours they've practice like that's what matters (even more than results:scratch:). That being said practicing the "right stuff" for longer periods of time will ultimately yield greater results than the "wrong stuff" for any number of hours/years. It is easy to get intimidated when you read about vai or gilbet practicing for 8-12 hours a day and think that you have to do the same. The time isn't all that important. Just monitor your progress and adjust practice time accordingly to match your personal goals. Also, any amount of time practicing/playing guitar is valuable as long as it is time enjoyed.

These days, I probably play somewhere between 30min to 2 hours on a given day on average. Some days/weeks i don't play at all depending on what else is going on in my life. I don't really keep track though as my routine doesn't consist of "A for Xminutes, B for Yminutes.." but is usually improvised. I spend most of my time just improvising, working on new concepts, a little bit of alt picking for warm up, and composing.

Huh... the last time I practiced must have been... seven months ago? And then cumulatively, it was probably three-hours-worth. When I pick up my guitar, I just play what I want. That's how I've ever really 'practiced', by having fun. I doubt I've ever spent more than ten hours of my six-plus-years playing on proper practice.

This. I like friends and stuff, but for me, Guitar > Socialising . Except when the socialising involves playing/recording :D

On another note, make sure the guitar is always fun. If you're not enjoying it, you probably need to "practice" differently. Always remember to have fun! This is important, as in the end it is the main aim (along with making music) of guitar. Or it is for me anyway :D

IMO

Yeah this is more or less what happened with me. Summers in high school I'd practice all day, every day. Falls were tough because I played football, and that was about 3 hours a day, almost everyday. Winter I played hockey, but I was less involved with that. Once I went to University, I was taking music, but totally lost interest. Most of my time was studying a lot of music history and english classes, and I just wanted to play guitar. It killed it for me, I just finished my B.Sc. and now that I'm working I'm playing a whole lot (playing catch up now).

My practicing has been a lot more focused now, and it's progressing a lot better. Definitely quality of practice over quantity.

I don't practice any exercises or anything, but I do practice songs and such for like, an hour or so a few times a week; grand total probably 4 hours or so learning actual songs, but a LOT more spent noodling in between

Guitar v life, FUCK YOU LIFE! I'd find a way to play sleeping if I could (I do make a habit of sleeping with them tho) but my guitar IS my life, I dropped out of college cause studying math, diction and learning to sing REALLY cut into my practice time, but I do agree that "what beat's how long" many of those hour's are wasted on "practicing" riff's and scale's I already knew like the back of my hand so now I go through different scale's on different day's, like today was monday so all my warm-up's and chord's were in B (I alternate between flat's sharp's and natural's rather than chromatically so they match with day's of the week) also I never use to use a metronome something I've also corrected recently, I'm also changing styles often, I was working on funk bass last month, this month feeling more 7 string tech-death.
but many of the best guitarist's I've ever read interview's from, other than the bulk of 80's shredder's, always seem to practice moderately at best while focusing mainly on songwriting, I believe Saint Joe once said "if you play the guitar for fun, you will play more, if you play more you get better"

I practice piano and drums mainly so unfortunately I don't get time to practice guitar much but when I do its just technical exercises and improving over backing tracks.

I used to practice all the time and I would say its definitely better to do short, focused practice than 8 hours of random exercises.

I honestly always feel guilty when I'm not practicing. I got a job working with a landscaping company when I was about 17 and during my time there I didn't touch a guitar for a whole week at one stage and that was somthing I had not experienced since starting around the age of 12. I haven't had or even considered any kind of "normal" or non musical (so to speak) job since  Back in my teen years I would pick up the guitar in 2 to 3 hour spurts ALL day and usually spend the early hours of the morning playing through to 5am. (no wonder I was always to tired to go to school) Practice mostly involved strict technique excersises, which is what I still practice these days but for some reason I always feel I'm slacking off lately and I think this feeling came about around the time started playing out in serious bands (about 18). Rehearsing with bands and playing songs and gigs or whatever are so far disconnected to what my mind considers proper practice that I forget that I'm still progressing during band practice, writing, gigging etc. Perhaps I should be a little easier on myself but that being said, on top of being extremely shy and not having much of a social life, band commitments and recording work leave me with alot of spare time so I've started putting together a strict practice routine to fit in to my days and plan to go at it pretty hard to help ease the guilt haha :lol :

I play all day at work for 8 hours so I rarely play guitar when I'm home. But when I play at work I don't look at it as practicing. I'm just doing my job and I usually play the same old riffs or patterns so I can make sure all the frets are good. Every once in a while I will actually practice some techniques or different chord shapes though.

I practice about half an hour a day. I think that the important thing is being constant in what you do, because practicing 3 hours(for example) one day a week is almost useless

but i must admit, the greatest thing about playing is this:

after a lot of days constantly playing guitar to STOP playing it for a day of two. the first hour after the "no playing" period just blows my mind... i get ideas that i've never thought of. also, after about 3 hours into my playing (3 hours... heh, rare occasion do to work and other s*it :( ) i get into "i am god" mode and everything i want to pull off seem easy...

gotta love the guitar...

and kudos 4 this thread... makes me wanna play right now :D
