+1, and WatchTower, too.

Oh, and Nevermore. They'd probably work for you...

Given that list... Tony Macalpine destroys yngwie for melodic feel, and is a near match for technique. Try "Maximum Security."

Also, Gordian Knot's "Emergent" is probably the best instrumental prog album I own. Sean Malone rocks.

i have that one on cassette

+1 @ Soilwork and Vince's CD.

i don't see any Satriani on that list either. you may dig his Crystal Planet album. it's very intense in places, and showcases his ability quite well.

Crystal Planet is a good album, but IMO pales in comparison to his earlier releases.

"Surfing with the Alien", "Flying in a Blue Dream", and "The Extremist" are just absolutely incredible albums. :yesway:

i really dig SWTA, and some tracks from FIABD are awesome. but for some reason, i can't really get into The Extremist that much. i'd say my favorite album would be his self-titled release. it's very bluesy, so i didn't think it'd fit with the list :)

Evergrey and Pain of Salvation are worth checking out. They're both among my favorite bands right now. A good place to start might be Evergrey's "Recreation Day" or "The Inner Circle", and Pain of Salvation's "Remedy Lane" or "The Perfect Element".

See, I absolutely love Crystal Planet and the Extremist, but while the music's incredible on Surfing, the production's a huge turnoff...

Seriously, when I bought CP, the only time it left my CD player the first two weeks was to go into someone else's. That was te first instrumental disc that clicked for me. :agreed:

Drew,
I can't agree more with you on Tony Macalpine. "Maximum Security" is probably his most well known album, but his stuff from the 90's is very good too with Premonition being my personal favorite.

I would also suggest Fates Warning, albeit not shred, but some very cool melodic prog metal.

Listening to your music, bro, I'm really not surprised. :yesway:

By the way, a former bandmember of mine from Connecticut also referred to himself as a no-talent ass clown. Is that some sort of regional thing?
