I just got the new G3 live in Tokyo today and was surprised on the second song Joe Satriani when he busted out a 7-string. Now, I know the Ibanez 7-string catalogue by heart, so I'm guessing this was either a one-off custom made for him or a prototype for a guitar that has yet to go into production. I must say, the JS body looked very nice with that extra-wide 7 neck...

Does anyone have any info on this guitar?

In any case, it looked awesome and I got a weird desire to own one while I watched him play (that was a kick-ass song he played on it, too...)

Oooh, thanks.

Very nice guitar... Joe just didn't seem like a 7-stringer, but that song was really awesome.

Joe used a 7-string on quite a few tunes from his latest cd. It's full of goodness

I have to agree. However, the irony of Joe playing a seven string more and more recently, and Steve Vai using downtuned sixes more and more just strikes me as odd.

I understand that there is a certain charm to a downtuned 6, but of all people to kind of abandon seven strings...

Really? I have his latest album (which is awesome, by the way), but I didn't really notice 7-strings... what songs on it were played on a 7-string? I do love "Seven String" off of "Strange Beautiful Music." Before I had a seven-string, I'd play that in E on my 6-string and think, "This would sound so much better on the low B of a 7."

Yeah, me too. Also "Mind Storm" & "Ceremony" from the same cd, which was one of the final factors in my deciding to go 7-string after YEARS of lusting for one.
As for his latest - lemme see... "Hands In The Air", "Lifestyle", "Souls Of Distortion" & "Searching". All those tunes for sure, but I seem to remember hearing little bits here & there.

Ceremony was off "Crystal Planet" :fawk: Possibly the greatest instrumental rock disc ever, IMO.

A production JS-7 is most likely a "no," short of Joe using one a lot over the next couple discs, and one of themr eally taking off... Sadly, the market just isn't there.

Mind Storm is on a 7!? I never noticed that. Mind Storm is possibly my favorite Satriani song of all time. That song is so awesome. I have thought before "this might be a seven", but I wasn't serious... wow... No wonder that song is "the bomb" (to quote someone I know). It's the seven... Of course, I've figured out how to play other Satch songs, but never "Mind Storm." Mmm, wow.

Can anyone name any recent Vai songs on the seven? I can't think of any...

Just bustin' your balls dude, it's what I do. :yesway:

Mindstorm's not a bad song, but I couldn't get into that entire CD. The production blows (the decision to use his home studio direct recorded tracks wasa bad one, IMO), and none of the songs feel "finished" to me. Satch at his best is one of the most lyrical soloists I've ever heard; his lead playing has this great narrative quality where it builds as it goes along and takes the listener on a musical journey. The majority of the solos on SBM, though, were very disjointed - they sounded like a string of unconnected ideas, rather than a musical passage. I've always thought of it as more of a Joe Satriani demo than an album.

Mountain Song is just a cool peice of music, though. :agreed:

I'm in love with "Searching."

It's been a really long time since I've loved a Satriani song from the very first time I heard it, most take a little time...
