Just got an Ibanez RGA8 and I am hoping to remove the gloss black finish, sand the body down, stain the wood, leave with plain or no finish. Can this be done? Difficulty? Concerns? Comments? Anyone have any ideas? Thanks much!

You've got a few options

Lots of sandpaper by hand or with tools.

Heat gun and scraper.

Lots of chemicals.

Any of these will works, braking the gloss is the hardest part, most of the wood on low end guitars is not very nice hence why they paint it. You might want a veneer, hard to do on arch top, or stain it really dark.

Are you sure the top is going to be worth it? You could take off the gloss/paint and sand down the body. Add a separate wood top like a Spalt or Burl. Would probably have a cheaper and maybe easier time with a veneer. I have a RGA8 as well. To have it with a Spalt top would kill. Match the headstock for balance.

I've seen a couple jobs done here, that have done things exactly & similar, to what you are proposing. It can be done.
