That ought to keep you going for awhile. And that's just classic '70s fusion stuff. There's tons of good modern fusion out there, too.

Modern fusion? Ohm. That's where I'd start.

Zappa?

I know he's not really considered "Fusion", but if fusion is taking different styles, understanding them and making them your own, he fits. Admittedly, some of his work is a hard listen, and it make take effort to understand what he's trying to accomplish, but his influences are all there: Classical (esp. Stravinsky, Varese), Doo-Wop, Dada (think early pre-Industrial layers of "simple" sounds), Blues, etc.

Heck, if he can play Stravinsky over Ina-Gada-Da-Vida, he deserves at least a token "fusion" label.

Chris, how could you forget Jeff Beck?

I'm getting old and forgetful. :) "Blow By Blow" is essential listening, and "Wired" is not far behind.

In addition to Helborg/Lane/Sipe's "Personae" that distressed romeo mentioned, I would add a few other Helborg/Lane collaborations: "Abstract Logic", "Temporal Analogues of Paradise," "Icon", and "Two Doors" (which they appear on half of). Shawn Lane, IMHO, did his best work in collaboration with Jonas Helborg, though Lane's "The Tri-Tone Fascination" is worth picking up also.

As for other new fusion, I'm not quite as well versed because I love my '70s stuff, but:

Greg Howe: "Extraction"
Planet X: "Moonbabies"
MacAlpine/Chambers/Brunel: "CAB"
Any of Derek Sherinian's recent solo albums
Allan Holdsworth: "Sixteen Men of Tain"
All of the Ohm releases

Cab is the only fusion album I have and I love it... My guitar teacher says its not really fusion though, not planet X either... Just that its progressiv rock with fusion elements. Great album though, thx for the responses! Ill start to look into this some day now.

Yes.

A lot of his music can broadly be considered fusion, I'd say:

Hot Rats
Waka Jawaka
The Grand Wazoo
Sleep Dirt
Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar
Jazz From Hell
Make a Jazz Noise Here
Imaginary Diseases

Greg Howe - anything but "Five" and "Ascend"
Howe/Kotzen - both CDs (Tilt/Project have great stuff on them)
Planet-X - (all good)
Jeff Beck -"Wired/Blow by Blow" both very good
Macalpine - Cab

if you can find this CD
Russo/Stravato "Contact"- 2 italian fusion shredders that fucking smoke :shred:
great CD.

Brett Garsed
Guthrie Govan
Frank Gambale
Richie Kotzen - "The Inner Galactic Fusion Experience" - way out there but he rips on that CD.

Well, that's the difficulty. A lot of modern 'fusion' is more rock-like than the classic fusion of the '70s. Back then, you typically had jazz players amping up and going loud. Now a lot of fusion is rock players expanding their minds (and chops). Philosophically quite different.

There's a lot of good music which falls somewhere between Prog and Fusion. Check out the mighty Gordian Knot for evidence.

Also, for fusion-influenced metal, try Aghora, Linear Sphere, Cynic or Spiral Architect.

I would like to specifically add Frank Gambale's "Thunder from Down Under" to this list.

Also, check out Wayne Krantz, Ralph Towner, John Scofield, and Terje Rypdal (some of his stuff is more modern classical than fusion, but it's still great).
