I'm probably making quite a failure out of myself here, but...

Jazz guitar gets so much better with 7 strings. You can do some wicked voicings with that extra bass string. Just get something that isn't stupid bright and you should be good. Roll your town knob down and use the neck pickup. Pretty much anything beyond that is gonna need a non-solid body.

You could say, of course "But Skyblue, why bother? you could just use your 6 for jazzing, and your awesome 7 for those brutal metal riffs!"

7 string guitarists wouldn't say this. 7 string guitar does not equal metal, it equals 6 string guitar + 1 extra string, it equals greater range, it equals more notes in one position, it equals more chord options and it equals a super comfortable neck IMO. It is still just an instrument that can be used by a musician to make music, any music they can think of.

I think atleast half of the people I see playing 7s and 8s would be better served by a baritone 6er. If you aren't going to make use of the extended range in your music then save yourself some dollar and tune down a 6. Don't get me wrong, I think everyone should make use of ERGs but I swear some people play them for reasons other than musical ones.

Well, I was just kidding =P the reason I want a 7 is for the extended range
all I meant to say is that it could be hard to find a versatile guitar that could handle both styles well ( I think?)

my j custom is really great for warm cleans as well as metal. also i had the old model with the edge pro so i installed piezos into it as well. i don't think this is possible with the new trem without milling. if you want piezos i guess go for the petrucci. i'm sure an rg2027 should be nice and warm too with the mahogany body and tone knob rolled down etc (has piezos)

I dont even have Piezos on mine...but coil split through my mark V is just glassy and incidentally the finest clean sound I've ever heard. My 7620 not so much for some reason...maybe its the wood hell I dunno.

any mohagony guitar with Seymour Duncan sh4/sh1 (or other 'sh').
It's easy to find a 6 string model in your favorite shop and judge by yourself.

honestly i had the exact same predicament. with both 7 and now 8. but ide say get a 7 that feels nice to you and just put either a dimarzio PAF or a Benedetto pickup in the neck. i got my buddies dean vendetta 1.7 from sounding like a tin can to a full john pizzarelli or george van epps sound with a dimarzio PAF7
