If you're going down that road, check out:
Trivium
Unearth
Shadows fall

and to a lesser extent
Atreyu

And before I get flamed, yes I do know that Atreyu is considered mainstream- crotchgrabbing - wannabe - goth , but some parts are very decent. I do have the benefit that they haven't been a hype over here.

Got all of Shadows Fall's albums and seen them live, got Triviums newest album and Atreyu's album :D Not heard of Unearth though...

Check out Dark Tranquility too. They are much like In Flames and Soilwork, but yet still do their own thing. All their albums are awesome, but right now I'm listening to Damage Done and Projector the most.

...exclusively on my playlist for weeks now. I love this shit! You guys got any other bands that are along the same lines as these two bands?

:shred:

I'm half in the bag and fully intend on submersing myself in the bag before long. My plan for the night is to be as much of an asshole on HC as possible.

I am with you, these are definitely some of my favorite bands.

Others to listen to:
Opeth (even better than In Flames and Soilwork)
Dark Tranquility
Katatonia
Mnemic
Amorphis
Evergrey
Hypocrisy
Byzantine
Into Eternity

I typically don't get into the really heavy stuff, but lately Soilwork has been in my playlist a LOT. I dunno if that qualifies as 'death metal' or not though.

Soilwork is too melodic to be death metal IMHO.

In Flames has a new album finished and waiting for artwork called, "Come Clarity." "Soundtrakc to Your Escape" has some soaring synth work that fits well into the music if you're into that. Check out the song, "The Quiet Place." It's one of my favorites.

Also, I HIGHLY recommend Killswitch Engage. Their new singer is wonderful, and the music is rockin as hell. I think you would enjoy the balance of vocals...screaming but very good singing as well. They are quite dynamic.

Am I the only one who thinks that Killswitch Engage's first album is *way* better than their new (super popular) album? To me, their first album is a classic for all time.

Yeah, Howard (Killswitch singer) is pretty amazing. Jamey Jasta on the Ball called him the hardest working man in metal one time. He's in another band called Blood Has Been Shed if you checkout Killswitch and like the vocals. Not as much clean singing on BHBS, but their album Spirals is worth checking out for mildly complex rhythms and some great vocals.

BHBS is *way* to thrashy/heavy for me. And I'm from the old-school San Francisco thrash scene. Howard's a great singer, and I like his new album and he is great live...That said, as I stated above, their first album is better. =P

"Swedish Death Metal." A term used, abused, and whored endlessly to describe a well of bands, the majority of which could never hold a flicker to bands of Insision's caliber. With the exception of only a few, such as Deranged, Defleshed, Hypocrisy, and others, most play ridiculous tribute to At The Gates, copying the pioneering sound found on Slaughter of the Soul, or the highly overated and completely unnecessary In Flames. The majority of Swedish "death metal" acts needlessly water down these two bands formulas with even more melody to the point of absolute nausea. This has made the term "Swedish death metal" a parody, as there is not a shred of violence, intensity, aggression, or brutality to speak of. The Polish scene, on the other hand, has been eclipsing the Swedish scene for some time now, producing absolute quality acts like Yattering, Decapitated, Hate, and others who still violently and uncompromisingly pledge allegiance to the real forged sounds of death metal's blunt force trauma. Amist of all this, Stockholm's Insision have been honing their blades and waiting for the final strike of Swedish Death. And then came Beneath the Folds of Flesh.

Personally, I think Dismember and Entombed are my favorite things to come out of Sweden. The newer, commercialized "Swedish Death Metal" isn't really all that death metal anymore. And it's definately not THE Swedish Death Metal.

Yes!...Just kidding. I personally think that their second album, "Alive or Just Breathing," is far superior. Although, I hate flat-out screaming screaming vocals...it's like palm-muting every note. It loses its effect after a while. I think that they explored the vocal dynamics on the second a lot more. However, the music is just friggin tops on "End of Heartache." The album could stand alone without vocals. It wold be less interesting, but I just dig their riffage because I am a sucker for bouncing off pedal tones and slow-moving bass notes.

Actually, by first album I meant Alive or Just Breathing is my favorite. I really didn't consider their earlier work(s) as "real" releases. They were more demos/EPs. And I think I basicly agree with you on screaming. What I really liked about this album was it was one of the first american bands that I listened to who played hard thrash metal, but mixed in melodic harmonies. I really liked that. I guess I should say that Fear Factory did the same thing earlier. I remember when I got KSE AoJB I told my friend that I thought KSE will be the "new Fear Factory". At that time, Fear Factory was officially broken up...luckily they are back now. And considering that Fear Factory was one of my favorite band of the last 10-15 years, that was high praise!.

That's funny... I'd never have made a connection between KSE and FF. I don't think their styles are anything similar. FF is more of a techno/industrial feel, whereas KSE is more of a swedish melodic feel.

I totally agree. But I had a void in my music life when Fear Factory "broke up". And I saw KSE filling that void. The only similarity I see is a similar use of melodic vocals...

Speaking of Fear Factory, does anyone know what Dino is doing now? I see him every once in a while at shows, but has he started a new project yet? Or is he too busy doing porn stars?

Last I heard he was in Brujeria and Asesino (sp?).
