Karnivool's Goliath Intro (Hoss' Part)

Has anyone noticed that Hoss' picks nonstop on this part of the song? i've been trying to figure this out for years with no luck. The best i can think of is either a tuner (being used as a mute) or better knowing their wackiness when it comes to composition, a delay set to 100% wet with a 1000ms + timing. which might explain the riff's odd timings..i mean think about it.

I think he is pressing a pedal with his left foot (a tuner or sth).
