Forum member Hal Sinden is in the process of recording an EP with his band Talanas, who are prog death metal, might be worth adding them and checking em out when tehy put stuff up :)

Also, I think Mastodon are quite prog, and Porcupine Tree are epic.

I haven't seen Riverside or Persefone mentioned yet. What about Green Carnation's Light of Day, Day of Darkness? There's also Estatic Fear, but they're more progressive doom metal, and Moonsorrow (more black/folk/viking than prog). Also can't forget about Focus ('70s prog). There's also a Brazilian prog metal band called Mindflow who's worth checking out. I'm not sure if they still do, but they had two of their albums online for free download a while back.

Darkwater is cool, too, but I'm not really into the lyrics (I found out about them, got the album and really enjoyed it...then found out that they're a christian band).

A couple others with long songs that aren't really prog but are still worth your time are Solstice, Haggard and Mael Mórdha.

My band Shroud of Bereavement is progressive death/doom metal...most of our songs are in the 10+ minute range, you can check us out on MySpace, link in my signature.

Can anyone give a prog metal band that writes really long songs?

I already know (and love)

Dream Theater
Opeth
IQ
Symphony X

Even though they aren't metal I also like:

King Crimson
Yes
Old Genesis
Poccul Harrum

I'm really looking for something in an 'old Symphony X' vein, but any prog metal would be fine.

Their not like symphony x but its progressive.
Try Gordion knott and Spiral architect also spastic ink

None of these are prog metal or anything near it. Tool is the only one I know that might fit the bill with a few of their songs.

Marillion, "Grendel," "Misplaced Childhood," "Clutching At Straws" ("Hotel Hobbies," "Warm Wet Circles" and "At That Time of the Night"), "Brave," "This Strange Engine," and "Estonia."

Fish, "Raingods With Zippos"

Earlier Steve Hackett and Anthony Phillips

Rick Wakeman

Jethro Tull, "Minstrel in the Gallery," "A Passion Play," and "Thick As a Brick"

Mike Oldfield

hmm, i thought of it as a long song that was just divided into chapters for the sake of listening to it a bit easier. but either way, agreed that it's a hell of an album!

:agreed:

Anesthetize is my favourite Porcupine Tree song - approx 18mins. Porcupine Tree are much more on the "rock" side of "prog" - there are some very interesting and melodic guitar solos in their songs (Anesthetize has a solo played by Alex Lifeson from Rush), and the vocals are sung cleanly without dominating the mix. PT's founder Steven Wilson is also their producer, as well as being the producer of Opeth's Blackwater Park, Deliverance and Damnation. So if you're an Opeth fan, Porcupine Tree are a great band to check out.
