I'm planning on buying one of these used! Price is the same.
Considering I'm playing tech/prog metal/hardcore, which one would you pick? The Mesa Boogie Roadster Dual Rec or the VHT Pitbull 100 (pre-UL)?
Some examples of the tone I'm looking for would be: August Burns Red, Parkway Drive, FellSilent, Periphery, Architects. I prefer a tight tone to a loose one (so the Rec will prob need to be boosted). The cleans need to be decent as well.
Thanks for your input!

Honestly I dont think you could go wrong with either.

And the fact that theres someone selling a pitbull on here for 1150$ when they cost like 3 grand would make me lean towards the pitbull.

I haven't messed around with either enough to give you a experienced answer though. From what I've read vht stuff really interests me since I've seen JJ I believe say you can get a range of dynamics from the thing without touching your guitar just based on how you pick.

I would shit my pants if I could get an amp to go from almost clean to raging distortion just by picking softer / harder.

I can get both a Pitbull as a Dual Rec Roadster for €1100 incl shipping to Belgium.. which is insane considering a new Dual Rec costs AT LEAST €2885 in Europe!
I know I can't go wrong with either, but it's about being just right :D
Thanks man!

Yeah, the dynamics on the VHT shit is insane.

Also, the one for sale here is a Pittbull 100, not the same as the UL which is over $3k. Back in the day they weren't that expensive. Not saying it's not a good deal or a good amp, just clarifying.

I am aware of that. How much where they going for exactly?
The tight low end and dynamics of the VHT should help me get the tone I described above, no?

by the way JJ you really help me out in EVERY thread I start about finding the right tone! Thanks man, truly appreciate it!

I guess. I'm not a fan of any of the bands you listed so I'm not too familiar with their tone...

But the VHT stuff is very tight, very articulate, very dynamic. If you use 0.01 mm picks and pick like a 5 year old girl, stay away. If you want a nice tight metal rhythm out of them, you have to pick like you mean it. It's very transparent and very unforgiving because it's not super compressed like other high gain heads. In summation, this is what I have to say about VHT:

Pretty much the exact description of what I need!
I'm using 1mm picks and paying attention to picking dynamics, no problemo there.
Awesome pic, the red eyes only add to the brutalness

Yeah JJ's a jerk, I had my heart set on a mark V after playing it and a few rectos and then one day thought to myself *Man it would be awesome if an amp had enough dynamics to go from clean to distorted just messing with my picking* and he spouts that out about vht's. Now I'm all over the place thinking again

Oh JJ... I dunno what you're talking about I just found this video and the vht definitely doesn't have enough distortion...

Yeah, people complain that VHT's don't have enough gain. They either have fucked up amps, pick way too softly, or are used to Metalzone's with the gain cranked to eleventy billion

*whistles nonchalantly*

Even though my amp is the one he's considering buying I'll give my unbiased thoughts.

August Burns Red uses Pitbulls I believe (Ultra Leads?) so I would say the VHT tone is definitely more of what you'd be looking for.

And tone wise there isn't much at all separating the One-Hundred and the Ultra Lead.

There is so much gain on tap it's ridiculous, I have mine set at 2:00 with the low-gain input and it's brutal.

There were A lot of changes from the hundred to the UL and I got word from the man himself that it is not a representation of the post 98 Ultra-leads but it is probably still a killer amp.

Also..that vid does the amp no justice..I realize tone is subjective and all but if I plugged into my UL and that is what I heard I would put it up for sale. It is a fizzy sloppy mess compared to what you are going to hear live when you dial it in. I am sure you will shat yourself when you hear one live.

Here is a much better clip and a killer song from Netmusicians.

Yeah the tone isn't identical but it's close, you can immediately tell it's a Pitbull. It's got serious bite and punch.

That amp was likely $2400-$2600usd new. Not much cheaper......

I have a couple early Pittbulls (92/94 Classic combos) and Marcus @ VHT told me the they would have been priced around $2800.....

It was around 3 years ago when VHT took the biggest price hike. I think everything went up 15-20%.
