Awesome... so I bought the Xbox 360 HD-DVD player last night and Season I of Heroes and Disc 2 didn't run. Okay, might be a bum disc... try all the other discs and they were fine. Weird. Back to Best Buy I go. Exchange it for another set. Sweet, no hassle there so I head back home and get ready to enjoy Episode III of the great series. WTF?! STILL not running. All the other discs work. Call up Microsoft support (OH-EHM-GEE so fun!) and have heard this guy say "AAHHHHHThank-you very much, I appreciate that." about 1,327 times now. I'm on hold waiting to see what his supervisor wants to do. I figured it was a good time to buy the HD-DVD player because they're running a special promotion where you get 5 free HD-DVDs with the purchase but you have to send away for them. I cut out the UPC already. Are you allowed to return them if you already did that? Arg I'm so pissed, I would love to make the 30 minute trip each way again (oh joy!) to return it but I don't know if they will even honor the return if the UPC has been removed even if you still have it. They close at 5 too so if I am going to do it I have to do it soon. :( Man, how lame... all I wanted was to relax and watch some HD goodness and I get the shaft job! :wallbash: :squint:

It appears to have been a software codec on the 2nd disc only. I took it back to best buy and they let me exchange Heroes Season I for Planet Earth HD!!! :woot: I'm enjoying it as we speak... sweet HD goodness! :D Stupid software codecs.....

APPARENTLY (according to MS lol ;)) it wasn't hardware-related. There was some codec on this batch of HD-DVD's on the 2nd disc that was causing the issue. $179 for the HDDVD attachment, and you get 5 free HD-DVDs? Fuck yeah! HD-DVDs (just like Blu-Ray, so fuck you PS3 guys before you say anything! :fawk: ) are expensive as hell (Planet Earth = 99.99 for the set in HD-DVD, 4-disc set) so that's not a bad deal. :agreed: Sony doesn't do that when you buy a PS3 with the onboard Blu-Ray player.

One thing to look into, try playing it when your Xbox is hooked up to Live. It might have an update that will make it work.. I just about smashed some shit when I tried to watch Planet Earth HD on my box tonight and it didn't work, but trying again with it plugged into Live downloaded and update and now it works great.

My 360 is hard-wired to my router so it's always connected to live. ;) I usually start up on the Live screen in Dashboard and then put the HD-DVD in the drive. :agreed:

Nah, actually its better. :D

Since Sony doesnt want porn on the Ps3, they're not allowing porn makers to distribute on blu-ray. Since that means Porn on HDDVD, HDDVD will win out. Its the exact same thing that happened between betamax and VHS :D

See, I thought that too... but then the argument comes into play of "well, VHS vs Beta was also PRE-internet... now that there is downloading of that stuff, who cares which format supports it?" I think it could go either way, but had this war between Sony and MS started like 15 years ago Blu-Ray would have died out in a few years just like Beta! That said, I hope HD-DVD is the winner here... stupid $600 system... Oh what?

Btw, the XBox 360 HD-DVD player will plug into any computer's USB port and most of the time will be recognized and run flawlessly. On a Mac, it works every time from what I've heard. I've been tempted to pick one up just for Nine Inch Nails - Beside You In Time to compare the quality with the regular DVD.

Just making fun of the amazingly silent and reliable 360. :)

I want an HD player. I'm tired of those crappy DVD's! When I have the money I'm going to grab a PS3. Lots and lots of awesome games coming out, and the system is sexy and reliable. :agreed:

Ugh. Another "let's bash MS" deal eh? How many PS and PS2 failures were there? I recall MASSIVE failures with some Sony hardware so please don't try to stir that one up. :squint: I'm not an MS fanboy at all, but I've had my 360 for like 2-3 years without issue. Never had mine die, never overheated, nothing. I don't know if the PS3 has been out long enough to do long-term testing on it's reliability but just because there haven't been a large amount dying yet (have there? I don't even know about the PS3) doesn't mean there might not be in the near future. Just saying is all... in every thread talking about MS you seem to pop up with something nasty to say about them or the hardware/software/etc. and I think it's kinda lame. I think Sony is a joke charging what they do for their system, but I don't go running into every PS thread going "oh look, that thing is a piece of crap!" :squint:

I didn't mean to offend anyone. I actually think it sucks that the XBox has these problems. I think it's ridiculous that the consumers have to put up with it. I would've probably gotten one by now if I wasn't afraid of having to ship it to Germany all the time, and probably will get one once they fix the problems. I really want to play Bioshock, Mass Effect, Alan Wake etc.

I'm not a fanboy either. But when you think about it, the PS3 isn't that expensive. You've bought an X360 and an HD-DVD drive. That's like, what, 500$? I assume you're paying for online, too? That's another 50$ every single year. I'm going to get a PS3 for the simple reason that there are far more games coming out on it that I'm interested in. I could've already gotten either one of them, but I chose the Wii. Why? Because of the games.

I bought my 360 used from some noob locally off of craigslist. He was a college student and wanted to go on vacation to Puerto Rico so he was selling it dirt cheap. It came with the receipt (had his name on it too so I know it wasn't stolen or anything ;)) and the 3-year extended warranty for like $150 less than they cost new. It was the version that had the HDD as well. :yesway: The only thing I paid sticker price on was the HD-DVD player, but at the same time with each HD-DVD being $25-30 each and you get 5 free movies with it I consider that essentially a worthwhile investment. The list you get to choose from wasn't amazing but a few of them were decent movies so it's all good... better than nothing right? :)

So far the player itself hasn't been the issue, but rather the software on the HD-DVDs. There also seems to be more HD-DVDs out than Blu-Ray DVDs. :agreed:

I wouldn't mind owning a PS3 but I refuse to pay that much for a system, hence why I bought my 360 used. I also have a Wii but find it lacking in the game department sadly. :( It also seems to be one of those systems that is really more fun when you have a group of friends over and I don't have much time to do that these days. :noplease:

That's a cool deal you got on the 360! :agreed:

I think the Wii has the best games out of the three. Then again, I'm a huge Nintendo fan, so that might have something to do with it. To me nothing compares to games like Zelda: Twilight Princess, Super Mario Galaxy (my most anticipated game in years! Only 6 weeks to go:drool:), Metroid Prime 3, Super Smash Bros. etc... The PS3 comes second with Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo, God of War and others. The 360 has a few really awesome looking games, but not really enough to get me to buy the system yet.

I think one of the ONLY reasons I would buy a PS3 is for Final Fantasy games. :agreed: Sadly, I don't even have the time for RPGs anymore so I guess that's another reason I'm not considering the PS3. Wii definitely has some fun games... hopefully they come out with like a Star Wars game soon... light saber battles FTW!!!

I'm not buying a PS3 until Metal Gear Solid 4 comes out, and then that is probably the only game I will play on it unless Final Fantasy XIII is as good as XII was for the PS2. 360 FTW
